Guan Yu's Red Hare

The renowned Three Kingdoms general Guan Yu cherished his steed, Red Hare, immensely. He not only groomed its coat personally but often took it to the stream for a bath during lulls in battle. Red Hare had a fierce temperament, yet it displayed unparalleled gentleness only in Guan Yu's presence. Though the army's rations were limited, whenever Guan Yu ate sweet dried fruits or malt candy brought by the common folk, he would secretly set aside a small piece. He'd place it in his palm and feed it to Red Hare. The horse would nuzzle Guan Yu's hand gently with its large nose, happily swallowing the treat. This bond of mutual understanding and affection made them the most famous pair of comrades in history.
