The Critically Endangered Fish That Walks on 'Hands': The Red Handfish

In the shallow reef areas of southeastern Tasmania, Australia, lives a fish that doesn't swim but walks on the seabed with its 'hands' – the Red Handfish (scientific name Thymichthys politus). Its pectoral fins have evolved into fin rays and joint structures resembling fingers, allowing it to support its body and 'stroll' on sandy beds and reefs, with a form and function remarkably similar to small hands. This unique mode of locomotion comes at the cost of completely abandoning swimming ability, making its world extremely confined. The Red Handfish is very small, typically less than 10 centimeters long. Its reclusive nature is exceptionally rare among fish: it moves an average of only about 4 meters per day, and its entire lifetime range is roughly equivalent to two tennis courts. After hatching, it sinks directly to the seabed, skipping the larval stage that disperses with ocean currents. While this strategy conserves energy and allows it to focus on ambushing small crustaceans in stable environments, it also means they have nowhere to escape if their habitat changes. Currently, the Red Handfish is listed as critically endangered, with an estimated wild population of fewer than 250 individuals, concentrated in a few reef areas near Hobart, such as Frederick Henry Bay. The main threat is not predators – its skin is believed to be toxic, deterring attackers – but rather the drastic degradation of its habitat. Overgrazing of seaweed by sea urchins, rising water temperatures, pollution, and coastal development are progressively shrinking their limited 'homestead'. In 2020, its close relative, the Spotted Handfish (Thymichthys politus), was officially declared extinct, sounding an alarm for the entire family. Amazing fish!
