Super Niño Strength Hits Record High, Alert for Heatwaves, Air Pollution, and Dengue Fever
The Central Weather Administration stated that the 2026 Niño has reached the definition standard for an El Niño event, classifying its strength as a super El Niño. The latest Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) reached 2.2, marking a new record high for the same period since 1950. The super El Niño is projected to peak in strength this winter and persist until next spring. According to international classifications, an ONI of 2.0°C or higher signifies a super El Niño. The health threats posed by a super El Niño cannot be ignored. In high-temperature environments, the body's efforts to dissipate heat increase cardiac load, and dehydration leads to increased blood viscosity, raising the risk of blood clots. Simultaneously, high temperatures and intense sunlight accelerate atmospheric chemical reactions, causing ground-level ozone concentrations to climb. Coupled with stagnant atmospheric convection that leads to pollutant accumulation, inhalation can increase the risk of acute myocardial infarction and respiratory distress. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reminds the public that the high temperatures and abnormal rainfall brought by the El Niño phenomenon are conducive to the growth and reproduction of disease vectors, increasing the risk of dengue fever transmission. The public should diligently implement 'inspect, empty, clean, scrub' to thoroughly eliminate standing water in containers. Protective recommendations include: avoiding outdoor activities during peak midday heat, wearing light-colored long-sleeved clothing when outdoors, using mosquito repellents containing DEET or Picaridin, ensuring adequate hydration daily, consuming a rainbow of fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, using curtains to block sunlight indoors, and opening windows for ventilation when temperatures drop at night. If symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle pain, or joint pain appear, seek medical attention promptly. For us, the most noticeable effects will probably be the heatwaves, more mosquitoes, and perhaps food shortages leading to inflation due to abnormal weather 🤔
