The Cringey Moment My Flip-Flops Screeched on Marble Floors
It was a summer afternoon, the streets still damp and sticky with heat after a downpour. I strolled into a chain supermarket, blasting its AC on full, wearing a pair of $10 flip-flops. For the first three minutes, everything was fine. Then, the rubber sole of my right flip-flop met a small patch of polished marble tile that had just been mopped and wasn't fully dry. In that instant, physics showed its most merciless side. The rubber grooves of the sole made perfect contact with the extremely smooth, wet surface. As my weight shifted forward for a millisecond, the air was squeezed out, followed by an ear-splitting screech of 'Squeeeeak!' with a frequency of 3000 Hz. The sound was so piercing, like a dying squeaky toy being run over by a truck, echoing through the four-meter-high ceiling of the fresh produce section for what felt like an eternity. A housewife picking out organic bell peppers stopped. A stocker's box froze mid-air. Even the 'beep' of the checkout scanner seemed to pause for a second. At least six pairs of eyes in the supermarket precisely locked onto the source of the sound, zeroing in on my right foot, suspended mid-air. I tried to put on a poker face, pretending it was a sudden mechanical failure, or perhaps the mournful cry of an innocent shopping cart wheel. However, the moment I carefully placed my right foot down, my left flip-flop delivered another blow with a 'pop!' At that moment, I wished I could evaporate into a wisp of steam and drift away through the air conditioning vent.
