Recommendation: The 'Onmyoji' Series (Baku Yumemakura)

Reasons: • Rich Folklore and Mythological Elements The stories are built upon Japanese Onmyōdō (esoteric cosmology), yokai (spirits/monsters), vengeful spirits, and folk beliefs from the Heian period. Many plots originate from ancient legends and folk concepts, making the reading experience akin to stepping into a museum filled with tales of gods and monsters. • Visualizing 'Emotions' into Stories The yokai or supernatural events in the books are often not mere frightening phenomena but extensions of human emotions. For instance, longing, jealousy, sorrow, and obsession can become the core of the story. If you're interested in human emotions and the inner world, you'll find resonance. • Gentle Atmosphere, Not Just Thrills While ghosts and mysterious events appear, the overall reading experience leans towards the poetic and healing. The protagonist, Abe no Seimei, often confronts supernatural beings with understanding rather than opposition, providing a calm emotional experience. • Combines Cultural Depth and Storytelling If you enjoy the beliefs, taboos, and traditional concepts behind folklore, this series is more than just a fantasy novel; it allows you to feel the ancient East Asian world's understanding of the human heart and destiny. One-sentence summary: The 'Onmyoji' series is highly recommended for those who love folklore and wish to explore emotions and the human psyche through stories. It's not just about yokai, but about the joys and sorrows hidden within people's hearts.
