Plants 'Talk' to Defend Themselves from External Threats!?

Did you all know about plants' defensive instincts? When plants are nibbled by insects, they release specific 'scented chemical substances (volatile organic compounds)' into the air. Neighboring plants that sense this go into 'alert mode' saying 'An enemy has arrived!' and start making their leaves bitter and producing compounds that insects dislike. Furthermore, this scent also acts as an 'SOS signal' to attract insects' natural enemies like wasps. The world is cleverly designed, isn't it~

Pure Water Doesn't Conduct Electricity!?

You all probably know that water conducts electricity well... but actually, even though it's water, pure water doesn't conduct electricity! So why does the water we use at home conduct electricity? It's because everyday tap water and river water conduct electricity due to dissolved "electrolytes (minerals)" like calcium and magnesium. Pure water can have negative effects on the body if consumed excessively, so such considerations are made, but this is what causes it to conduct electricity~

The Secret of the Trump King Card

Among the 'King (K)' cards in a deck of playing cards, only the King of Diamonds is missing a mustache. It's said that this is a remnant from when the woodblock print of the person who modeled the card (though there are various theories, such as Charles VII of France) was made, and a craftsman mistakenly carved off the mustache.

The 'Packaging Rules' for 100% Fruit Juice

Fruit juice packs you see at the supermarket have strict rules in Japan. Only 100% fruit juice is allowed to feature 'illustrations or photos of cut fruit (cross-sections)'. Juices with 5% to less than 100% fruit juice can only use 'illustrations of whole fruit with the peel on', and anything below 5% isn't even allowed to depict fruit realistically.

Strawberry 'seeds' aren't actually seeds!?

Those things we call strawberry seeds aren't actually seeds. They're called achenes, and each one is technically a fruit. The real seeds of the strawberry are located inside each of those achenes.

Utility Pole 'Patterns' Are Landmarks to Prevent Getting Lost

If you look closely at the concrete utility poles you see in the city, you'll notice striped patterns and signs with numbers written on them (pole tags). Actually, the place names and numbers written on those signs are the 'address (unique ID)' for that specific pole. If you get lost in the city, or encounter an accident or fire, telling the police or fire department the number on that pole can be a lifesaver, allowing them to pinpoint your exact location instantly.

The Star-Shaped Mayonnaise Nozzle Is Unique to Japan

The familiar, pretty "star shape" of Japanese mayonnaise nozzles is actually a very rare, Japan-exclusive cultural feature globally. Overseas, mayonnaise typically comes in jars you scoop out with a spoon or has a thin, round nozzle for squeezing. Japanese manufacturers developed it with the idea of "making salads look beautiful and dining tables more enjoyable," apparently as a form of Japanese hospitality (omotenashi).

The '1 in 10,000 Lucky Bubble' of Bubble Wrap

You know, that bubble wrap (commonly called 'puchi puchi' in Japan) used for packing. Actually, as a little joke from the manufacturer (Kawakami Sangyo), there's a 1 in 10,000 chance of finding a 'heart-shaped bubble' hidden among them. If you find one, consider it your lucky day. Even rarer, they say there's a 1 in 1,000,000 chance of finding a 'four-leaf clover-shaped bubble'.

Sunscreen is meaningless if not reapplied 'every 2 hours'

The numbers like 'SPF50' written on sunscreen are theoretical values based on the assumption that they won't wash off from sweat or friction. In reality, they can easily come off due to sweat and rubbing against clothes, so 'frequent reapplication' is more important than a high number.

Curry really cools you down when eaten in summer

The spices in curry (like chili peppers and ginger) temporarily raise your body temperature. However, this is followed by sweating profusely, and the heat is released through evaporative cooling, which ultimately lowers your body temperature and makes you feel cooler.
