Sorting Out My Feelings
I'm writing this because I just want to vent a little. ※This is not a happy topic. ーーー My grandfather passed away yesterday. He had been in and out of the hospital a few times over the past year or two, but each time he seemed fine and we could talk normally. I was told by his doctor that he had been given a terminal diagnosis and might not make it past the autumn equinox, and that he would eventually lose the ability to speak. I prepared myself for it. However, when I saw him in the hospital room, he seemed more energetic than I expected and was speaking clearly, making me wonder if what the doctor had said was true. It was the autumn equinox, and after visiting the graves, I went to see my grandfather. He was lying in bed, but he seemed well and was talking, which gave me some relief. A few days later, his condition worsened, and he could no longer communicate. I wondered why, when he was speaking so clearly just a few days ago. He had weakened swallowing ability and couldn't eat anything. His breathing became shallow, and I was told he was in a state where anything could happen at any moment, filling me with anxiety. The next day, my grandfather passed away. Our last conversation was about something very trivial. Even so, I keep thinking that I should have called him more often or visited him to talk.

I'm truly sorry for your loss. But I believe your grandfather was happy to have had many conversations with you.

They say that when a sick person experiences a temporary remission before the end, it's called 'nakanaori'. My grandfather is also suffering from emphysema due to excessive smoking and is receiving medication via inhaler. His appetite has decreased and he's spending more time sleeping, so it seems we need to prepare ourselves soon...
