xxxHOLiC
The genre is occult, modern fantasy, and dark fantasy. The author is Clamp, known for works like Cardcaptor Sakura, Tokyo Babylon, and Magic Knight Rayearth. They are a team of 4 female artists! This work touches upon all of Clamp's various universes. If 'Tsubasa Chronicle' is the work where all Clamp's creations are paid homage to, then xxxHOLiC feels like the bridge connecting them. It has a dreamy yet philosophical vibe, which I really like. From the first volume, the 'chicken stick' from Cardcaptor Sakura appears, and elements from other works pop up here and there. The elongated art style can be polarizing, but I got used to it quickly. It was discontinued once, but last year, they re-released it with a new cover as a premium collection xxxHOLiC (I'm typing it in Korean because it's all in English). I managed to buy an old used copy for more than the price of a new one, sadly (but I bought the new one too). Here's the most famous line: "There are no coincidences in this world. Only destiny." Definitely check out Tsubasa Chronicle too~ It's the most closely linked to Cardcaptor Sakura and this series!

[Review] Gintama
Gintama's genre is Gintama. There's no other way to explain it. It's divided into slice-of-life episodes and serious arcs. The slice-of-life episodes are comedic, while the serious arcs focus on the story. There's a lot of crude humor, but it also has a significant female fanbase. That's because many good-looking male characters appear. As a woman, I sometimes wonder if Gintama actually had crude humor. It's not really crude by those standards. The anime, made by equally crazy people as the manga artists, shows considerable quality. Especially since Gintama features many parodies of other manga, it's more enjoyable if you're familiar with various works. For example, both Asran Zara from Gundam SEED and Katsura Kotarou from Gintama share the same voice actor, Akira Ishida. In the Gintama anime, there's a scene where Katsura Kotarou rides a Gundam and shouts, "Katsura, ikimasu!" (A parody of "Kira Yamato, ikimasu!") Why is there a Gundam in Gintama? ...Because it's Gintama. *nods* It's good to read the manga, but I highly recommend watching the anime. The production staff must have been high.

[Review] Haikyu!!
A fun volleyball manga. The word "Haikyu" itself means volleyball in Japanese. The anime was also successful... or it almost was, but it showed some terrible animation errors in the 4th season, and it almost became a forgotten work. You shouldn't think about the anime's art style when reading the manga. Because the anime's art style is much better. The protagonist, Hinata Shoyo, is a short high school boy. Due to his short stature, he wasn't suited for volleyball, but he overcame it with incredible stamina and elasticity, and in the latter half of the story, he becomes Japan's top volleyball player. Hinata Shoyo enters Karasuno High School and pairs up with Kageyama Tobio, showcasing a technique called the "Mongeki" (freak quick attack) that surprises opposing teams. This is a truly unbelievable technique, and if you don't react quickly, you'll find yourself thinking, "Huh? Did I just get scored on?" The psychological depiction is good, and the occasional frightening effects are also quite nice. It's also a manga that casts a spell on you, making you change your favorite character as you read. Even if you don't know volleyball, you can enjoy it, so I recommend it.

Golden Kamuy
This is the action-packed manga [Golden Kamuy], serialized from 2014 to 2022 by Satoru Noda. Set in the rugged Hokkaido after the Russo-Japanese War ended in 1905, it follows the journey of Sugimoto, a former soldier known as the "Immortal," and Asirpa, an Ainu girl, as they search for hidden gold. Along the way, they become entangled with the Hokkaido 7th Division, Russia, the Ainu people, and various criminals, leading to a series of events. The series received high praise for thoroughly researching and introducing Ainu culture to the world. It masterfully balances the brutality of characters harboring madness and trauma with quirky humor and peaceful eating scenes, creating a smooth narrative. However, please be aware that the high level of gore and bizarre, even absurd, dark humor may be unsettling for some readers. It won the Grand Prize at the 2016 Japan Cartoonists Association Award and the Grand Prize at the 2018 Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.

The Case Study of Vanitas
This is a work by Jun Mochizuki, the same author as Pandora Hearts, about the vampire Noé and the human Vanitas. (I got the synopsis from the internet) It's a shame it's currently on hiatus for some reason, but I highly recommend it because it's so fun👍 The anime also has a first season, and unlike Pandora Hearts, it follows the original story well, which I'm very satisfied with! (This is also available on Kakaopage with a "wait for free" option) This is the story of a dying vampire 19th-century France, where humans and vampires coexist Noé, a young vampire, heads to Paris in search of the grimoire 'The Case Study of Vanitas,' said to curse vampires. On his way to Paris, en route aboard an airship, Noé encounters a certain incident. And amidst the chaos, a human named Vanitas appears before Noé, claiming to be a vampire doctor. In Vanitas's hand is the grimoire of curses, 'The Case Study of Vanitas,' that Noé was searching for. The tale of curse and salvation, beginning with the meeting of these two, now unfolds....

[Review] Slam Dunk: The New Edition
Do you like... basketball? Yes, I do. And this time, I'm not lying. It's the basketball masterpiece, Slam Dunk. There are so many famous lines like "My left hand is just for show," "Sensei, I want to play basketball," and "Do you like basketball?" The character names are also incredibly well-localized, showing just how good a translator can be. How can you not love Kang Baek-ho and Seo Tae-woong? The story follows Kang Baek-ho, who had no interest in basketball, as he joins the Buksan High School basketball team as a rookie and grows, after receiving a confession attack from Chae So-yeon asking, "Do you like basketball?" In 2022, a new anime called "The First Slam Dunk" was released, which covers the long-awaited showdown with the final boss, Sannoh Kogyo, that many fans of the original series regretted not seeing. For reference, the protagonist of "The First Slam Dunk" is Song Tae-seop. It also delves into the backstories of the other four members of the Buksan High team, so fans of Chae Chi-su, Jung Dae-man, Song Tae-seop, Kang Baek-ho, and Seo Tae-woong can fully enjoy it. Personally, I really love Jung Dae-man.

[Review] Kuroko's Basketball EXTRA GAME
Can the Generation of Miracles ever reunite? This is an extra chapter after the main story concluded, which resolves that very question. In this story, the Generation of Miracles + Kagami + Kuroko form a single team to face a new opponent(?), the US team. It's definitely a cheat combination with the Generation of Miracles, Kagami, and Kuroko on one side, but the opposing team surpasses them. Do kids these days eat well and get that built? They all look like they're not high schoolers at all. Of course, the US team consists of adults. But the "miraculous cheat team" they're facing doesn't lose in terms of appearance either. Well... when it comes to that, Prince of Tennis is pretty much the top, so these guys are just cute high schoolers in comparison. By the way, the anime and manga versions have different endings. Personally, I prefer the manga ending. If it ends like the anime, our Kuroko would just become a player who only passes the ball. If you're a fan of Kuroko's Basketball, you'll definitely enjoy this. Especially since scenes where they enter the zone appear frequently, you can feel an immense sense of 'fan service'.

[Review] Kuroko's Basketball
Basketball... do you like it...? Handsome guys... do you like them...? If so, you absolutely have to watch it. Although the art style isn't great at first, it suddenly improves at some point, making it a feast for the eyes. Kuroko, who specializes in passing, meets Kagami, a prodigy with immense talent, and strives to become the strongest in high school basketball to prove that his way of playing isn't wrong. It was also adapted well into an anime. The 1-on-1 match between Kagami and Aomine is particularly breathtaking. The characters in Kuroko's Basketball each have a kanji in their names that corresponds to their team. For example, the Seirin basketball team, to which Kuroko and Kagami belong, has names that include the days of the week: Shun Izuki (月), Taiga Kagami (火), Rinnosuke Mitobe (水), Tetsu Kiyoshi (木), Shinji Koganei (金), Satoshi Tsuchida (土), and Junpei Hyuga (日). The Generation of Miracles includes: Seijuro Akashi (赤), Ryota Kise (黄), Shintaro Midorima (緑), Daiki Aomine (青), Atsushi Murasakibara (紫), and Tetsuya Kuroko (黒) with colors in their names. Knowing this will make it even more enjoyable to watch.

Otoyomegatari (Bride's Story)
This is "Otoyomegatari" (Bride's Story) by Kaoru Mori, depicting the stories of various tribes in 19th-century Central Asia along the Silk Road and the brides who married into those communities. The story unfolds by following the journey of a foreign scholar, 'Henry Smith,' allowing the episodes to shift and expand, showcasing diverse aspects. Its most significant feature is the overwhelming art quality, close to that of a master craftsman, by Kaoru Mori. The traditional Central Asian clothing, carpet patterns, accessories, and woodwork are meticulously drawn with pen lines, creating an awe-inspiring effect. Serialization began in 2008 and is currently on hiatus. This work, which won the Grand Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2014, tells its story calmly and warmly without being sensational, making it a manga that can be enjoyed without feeling burdened.
