If you participate a lot in content where you can get batteries, like Rally races, Simulation monthly challenges, and Merge Town, you can purchase decent karts and pets even if you're a free-to-play player. My alt account also did that, got the top-tier car and a legendary pet, and is holding its own in ranked matches.
