Saw mounted police for the first time with my own eyes!

I'd seen posts online before and knew New Taipei had mounted police. But this was the first time I saw them in person! On the bus, I suddenly thought: I've got a photo for a post! 🤣

Poinsettia: The 'Blood-Stopper' That Grows Close to the Ground

In the summer and autumn seasons, you can often find a small plant with reddish stems and leaves, growing low to the ground along roadsides, field edges, or in cracks between bricks. If you casually break its slender stem, a milky white sap will ooze out, much like milk. This is Poinsettia (local name: Di Jin Cao), an annual herbaceous plant of the genus Euphorbia in the family Euphorbiaceae, distributed throughout China except for Hainan. The most prominent feature of Poinsettia is its prostrate, highly branched stems, with opposite, oblong leaves that have finely serrated edges, often tinged with light red amidst the green. It gets its name 'Di Jin' (地錦) from its 'red stems spreading on the ground,' and is also known as 'Xue Jian Chou' (血見愁), meaning 'blood-stopper,' by the common folk for its ability to 'treat blood-related ailments.' It is tenacious, rooting in rock crevices and wastelands, and its above-ground parts spread widely, helping to conserve soil and water. In traditional medicine, dried Poinsettia is used as an herb. It has a pungent taste and a neutral property, acting on the liver and large intestine meridians. It possesses functions of clearing heat and detoxifying, cooling the blood and stopping bleeding, and resolving dampness and reducing jaundice. Folk medicine often mashes fresh Poinsettia and applies it to wounds to stop bleeding, or decocts it for internal use to treat dysentery, blood in the stool, and damp-heat jaundice. Modern research has found that Poinsettia contains chemical components such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, and terpenoids, exhibiting various biological activities including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hemostatic, and hepatoprotective effects. Quercetin, luteolin, and gallic acid are considered its key active components. However, Poinsettia is not suitable for everyone. Individuals with weak spleen and stomach or pregnant women should use it with caution, and it's best to consult a professional physician before use. This small plant, growing close to the ground, holds medicinal wisdom that should not be underestimated. I think I've seen this before. I remember the white sap being sticky, and I just thought it was a weed. I didn't realize it had a hemostatic effect! 🤔

How Grass Jelly is Made from Grass to Jelly

When boiling dried grass jelly, a small amount of edible alkali (like sodium carbonate) is usually added. This is because an alkaline environment can effectively break down plant cell walls, accelerating the release of trapped polysaccharides and colloids, and significantly shortening the boiling time. Grass jelly extract naturally contains divalent metal ions such as calcium ions (Ca²⁺) and magnesium ions (Mg²⁺). These ions act like 'natural buttons,' forming ionic cross-links with the long chains of polysaccharides, tightly binding the strands together. Although grass jelly extract has its own colloids, its concentration is usually insufficient for it to 'spontaneously' solidify into a perfect shape (pure plant-based grass jelly colloid is only about 20%). Therefore, traditional methods involve adding a small amount of tapioca starch, sweet potato starch, or cassava starch. When starch encounters heat, it gelatinizes (molecules swell and unfold), and cross-links with the long polysaccharide chains of the grass jelly, trapping water molecules within, thereby weaving a dense three-dimensional network structure. Since grass jelly is a network formed by the cross-linking of polysaccharides, ions, and starch, this structure is extremely stable and thermally irreversible. Therefore, even when pure grass jelly is added to hot soup ingredients in the summer or heated into a 'smooth grass jelly dessert,' it will maintain its soft, solid state and will not turn into water.

Gems are so hard to earn!

I took a look at the recent gem distribution, and it feels like it's noticeably decreasing. I'm curious if the system is adjusting the ratios. Also, how do you actually succeed with commission quests? I'm always ineligible, it's a headache!

When the Law Punishes Good Deeds, Who Will Dare to Help Again?

In February this year, a retired professor in his 60s, Mr. Liu, was taking an escalator at Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT station in Taipei when a woman in front of him, also in her 60s, suddenly fell. Mr. Liu reached out to try and catch her but failed, and the woman fell to the ground. Afterwards, the woman filed a lawsuit against Mr. Liu for negligent injury. During the investigation, the prosecutor believed Mr. Liu had collided with the woman and did not believe his testimony, refusing to re-examine the surveillance footage or conduct a lie detector test. The woman sought 500,000 NTD in compensation, but negotiations broke down. Mr. Liu was indicted for negligent injury, was deeply affected, and began to doubt whether he should continue to do good deeds. In court at the Taipei District Court, Judge Song Entong shared a similar experience, ultimately choosing to extend a helping hand because he believed in the value of doing good. The two parties eventually reached a settlement for 110,000 NTD. Mr. Liu stated in court that if given the chance again, he would still choose to help the woman and hoped to continue believing in the value of good deeds. This case sparked heated debate, with netizens questioning: "Settling for 110,000 NTD and still having to believe in the value of good deeds?" In fact, Article 175 of the Civil Code stipulates that managers who act to avert an imminent danger to another person's life or body shall not be liable for damages unless they acted with malice or gross negligence. Article 14-2 of the Emergency Medical Treatment Act also incorporates the spirit of "no punishment for saving lives." However, the gap between legal protection and practical application remains the deepest reflection of this case. Besides the greedy, evil, and heartless woman, the biggest problem is the judge and prosecutor🙄 Their logic is the same as mainland China's: 'If you didn't bump into her, why help her?'🙄 The judge even had the nerve to suggest settling with money, which is basically encouraging the trend of malicious lawsuits🙄
