The Lost Gojūon: ゑ
Update: Thanks to the moderator for the additional info. I forgot to save one for the 'wa' row: を wo 😭 - Original: I heard this from someone who passed N1 before. ゑ (pronounced 'we') is a lost sound from the Gojūon (Japanese syllabary). Apparently, there were originally wa/wi/wu/we/wo. But later, only わ (wa) remained. However, due to recent subculture trends, young people have started using this sound again.

In college, I folded a 3D 'ゑ' out of origami and gave it to my Japanese professor 😂 'ゑ' is from the 'wa' row, and I actually kept the particle 'を(wo)' too. Still using it now (*ºωº)σツンツン (lol)

I knew the 'wa' row disappeared, but I didn't know it looked like this. That's so unique! 😆

わ (wa) is 'wa', similar to お (o) but used differently. お is used at the beginning, like in お弁当 (obento - lunchbox) 🍱. を is used as a particle, like in 日本語を勉強する (nihongo o benkyou suru - to study Japanese).

As someone who's self-taught, this is the first time I've ever seen this sound. LOL
