Classic Movie Recommendation - Infernal Affairs

Infernal Affairs is not just a classic Hong Kong police thriller, but a cinematic masterpiece with incredibly compelling plot, acting, and atmosphere. The film cleverly uses somber, cool-toned visuals and oppressive background music to evoke a suffocating sense of inescapable dread. Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Andy Lau's characters, Lau Kin-ming and Chen Wing-yan, infiltrate the triads and police force respectively. Two individuals with opposite identities but similar fates endure immense mental anguish during their long years undercover, prompting the audience to deeply question 'Who are the real good guys and bad guys.' The film's brilliance lies in its departure from traditional black-and-white moral frameworks, instead focusing on the collective confusion stemming from misplaced identities. The iconic rooftop confrontation scene is packed with tension. When Chen Wing-yan draws his gun on Lau Kin-ming and says, 'I want to be a good person,' it expresses the profound sorrow and tragedy of being trapped by circumstances. Tony Leung's weary, desperate eyes contrast with Andy Lau's struggle to escape his past, creating explosive chemistry between the two leads. The ending is heart-wrenching, leaving behind an endless aftertaste of helplessness. Infernal Affairs is worth rewatching; the first viewing immerses you in the plot, while subsequent viewings allow you to savor the impermanence of human nature.
