Movie Recommendation - Black Gold (A Moment of Romance)

Released in 1997, 'Black Gold' (Taiwan release title 'A Moment of Romance') is directed by Michael Mak and written by Mak Dong-wo, starring Andy Lau and Tony Leung Ka-fai. The story follows ICAC investigator Fong Kwok-fai (Andy Lau) who upholds justice, pursuing triad boss Chow Chiu-sing (Tony Leung Ka-fai), who attempts to 'launder' his way into running for legislator through money and underworld connections, leading to a suspenseful showdown between good and evil. The biggest highlight of this film is undoubtedly Tony Leung Ka-fai's god-tier acting. He vividly portrays Chow Chiu-sing's sinister, cunning, domineering, and arrogant nature. His classic line, 'Who agrees? Who opposes?' still carries immense oppressive power today, and his personal charisma alone is enough to etch this film into cinematic history. The movie also showcases the ultimate power of Hong Kong cinema's golden era. From taxi shootouts to car chases, the large-scale effects are impressive. Simultaneously, it boldly depicts the dark side of Taiwanese politics in the 1990s, including bid-rigging in construction projects, vote-buying in elections, and religious fraud, with extremely strong critical force. Although some action scenes are slightly exaggerated and Andy Lau's character is a bit too straightforward and flat, the tight pacing and profound depiction of interest exchanges remain thought-provoking even today. This is a must-watch film that fans of crime and political thrillers absolutely cannot miss!
