The Thing You Forgot

As I was leaving the house in the morning, she suddenly ran down after me. "Wait!" I turned around and saw her running up, out of breath. "You forgot something." She put a mint into my hand. I was taken aback for a moment. "I didn't forget anything." "Yes, you did." "What?" She pointed to my mouth. "You didn't eat breakfast today." I chuckled. "So, is this breakfast?" "Of course not." She popped the other one into her own mouth. "Let's go for a real one after work." That night, we ate at a small restaurant near the office. She ordered her usual favorite fried rice, but after only a few bites, she pushed the bowl towards me. "I can't finish this." I looked at the rice, more than half of it left. "You always say you can't finish it." "Because I know you'll eat it." I asked deliberately, "What if one day I don't eat it?" She thought for a moment. "Then I'll just order less." Smiling, I lowered my head and finished the rest of the rice. As we walked out of the restaurant, she suddenly took my hand. "What should we have for breakfast tomorrow?" "You decide." "Then I want to have egg toast." "Okay." She swung our joined hands. "I want two." "Can you finish two?" "No." She smiled and leaned against me. "That's why I need you to be with me."
