Cat Fur Standing on End: Fear or Excitement?
When a cat's fur stands on end, it's scientifically known as piloerection, an involuntary physiological response. Why does this happen? Firstly, it's due to fear and defense. Tiny muscles called 'arrector pili' are attached to the base of a cat's fur. When faced with a threat (like a strange animal, loud noise, or sudden scare), the brain rapidly secretes adrenaline. These muscles contract, causing all the fur to stand up instantly. Combined with an arched back and a puffed-up tail, this visually 'inflates' the cat's size by double. It's a survival tactic designed to make them appear more formidable and thus deter enemies. The kitten in the picture is clearly in a situation causing extreme tension. Secondly, it can be due to intense excitement or overstimulation. Cats might exhibit localized fur standing on end when playing wildly or when feeling uncomfortable from excessive petting by their owner. Additionally, cold temperatures or static electricity can cause fur to stand up, trapping air for insulation, though this usually isn't accompanied by an arched back. How should owners respond? If you see your cat's fur standing on end, never find it funny and try to pick them up. At this moment, they are in a high-alert 'fight or flight' state and are prone to scratching or biting. The correct approach is to immediately identify and remove the source of the threat (like noise or unfamiliar objects) and give the cat space. Avoid direct eye contact and let them calm down on their own. If they remain tense for a long time, try distracting them with treats or a feather wand. If necessary, provide a quiet, hidden corner to prevent a stress reaction. Fur standing on end is a cat's instinct to protect itself. Understanding this signal is key to providing them with a sense of security.

I don't know much about cats, but if they arch their back, I won't go near them.
