From 2000 to 7500 Yuan: Choices and Costs in the Tragedy of Aden High Altitude Sickness

A 21-year-old backpacker in Riach, Sichuan, suffered severe altitude sickness at an altitude of 4500 meters, with blood oxygen levels dropping to 53%. He ultimately died during the descent. Controversies surrounding the rescue include not only the fact that he himself had refused a horse-transport escort plan costing around 2000 yuan, but also the involvement of his cousin. According to a widely circulated version, the cousin contacted a horse-transport service, which quoted 10,000 yuan to ascend and rescue the person. She found it too expensive, refused, blocked them, and then posted online requesting free rescue teams and helicopters, insisting on waiting for free support. This claim quickly drew criticism that "the family was unwilling to spend money." However, official verification differs from the online narrative. Rescue personnel involved stated that claims such as "the sister sought a free helicopter and was unwilling to pay for horse transport" could not be verified by multiple parties. What can be verified is: during the descent, with the consent of the deceased's mother, 10,000 yuan was transferred to hire horse transport and guides, with 2500 yuan refunded afterward, making the actual payment 7500 yuan. After descending, the mother also wanted to give a red envelope to the rescuers as thanks, but it was politely declined. This suggests that the narrative of "the family refusing to pay any fees" is at least simplified and distorted. Regardless of the specific details of the cousin's case, the medical logic of high-altitude rescue remains unchanged: the only effective emergency treatment for severe altitude sickness is to descend as quickly as possible. Waiting at 4500 meters for free rescue from afar is gambling the most precious time against the most uncontrollable variables. Between the online "refusal to pay" and the official verification of "payment made" lies the lost golden window. I think, really, don't push yourself. If your body feels wrong, accept help when someone offers it. Don't stubbornly endure... Spend the money that needs to be spent.... Life is the most important thing...

When facing life, there's truly nothing more important than the judgment of the moment. Don't let temporary stubbornness or considerations become irreversible regrets; taking good care of yourself is what matters most. These kinds of things truly weigh heavily on the heart.

Altitude sickness can really be deadly. The golden hour is measured in seconds, so never push yourself and miss this window. You need to shorten the rescue time as much as possible, but be sure to prepare before going to high altitudes. Drink Rhodiola beforehand and bring an oxygen tank. When you start feeling short of breath, don't hesitate, just take a few breaths of oxygen. This will alleviate altitude sickness and allow you to descend immediately, while calling for rescue. Lives are at stake!
