Mom is the Last Takeout: A Record of Matriphagy in African Social Spiders
When you think of motherly love, you think of gentleness, sacrifice, and selflessness. But African social spiders offer a hardcore version: feeding themselves to their offspring, leaving nothing behind. This is called 'matriphagy.' A female spider becomes a mother only once in her life because her children will eat her. A documentary has captured the entire process for the first time. Raising young consumes so much energy that the female becomes sluggish. Her difficult movements vibrate the web, simulating the signals of trapped insects. For the spiderlings, this signal means only one thing: dinner time. They swarm forward, devouring their mother and ending her short life. What's even more incredible is that these offspring, who inherited their mother's flesh and blood, will later cooperate in hunts to take down prey several times larger than themselves, instantly becoming max-level players. They literally take off from their mother's corpse. Interestingly, there are others silently contributing in the 'crèche.' African social spiders like to live together, their nests like massive shared apartments. However, only about 40% of females get the chance to mate and have children. What are the remaining 60% of single 'aunties' doing? They're all acting as free babysitters! Scientists call them 'virgin females,' like tragic office workers forced into a family group chat they can't mute. They care for their sisters' children, collectively build webs, hunt, and feed them. When food is scarce, these aunties might even follow their mothers' path, contributing themselves to become extra dishes for their nieces and nephews. So, the next time you complain about your mom, think of the African social spider's dinner table – that meal was truly 'giving her all.' My only thought after reading this introduction is 'Whoa‼️' There's a video online, but I absolutely don't want to click on it... If you're interested, search for it yourself.

Reading this story really weighed on my heart. A mother's love poured out completely is great, but such a sacrifice is truly heartbreaking. Peiise, you must feel the same way I do. Try not to dwell on those images anymore, and get some good rest.

After watching, I felt a deep emotion in my heart🥺 I realized that maternal love can appear in nature in such a heartbreaking yet admirable way. Although the way of life is different from what we are familiar with, the instinct to sacrifice for one's children is truly moving. Thank you for sharing, it made me cherish every love and life more deeply❤️
