During the Obon festival when I was little, my brother and I visited our grandmother's house in Akita. That day, we were playing near a vast rice field. As it approached noon, the wind that had been blowing suddenly stopped. However, my brother kept staring into the distance. "What are you looking at?" Following his gaze, I saw a white object, about human-sized, wriggling incessantly in the far-off field. "It must be a scarecrow, right? Moving because of the wind." That's what we both thought at first. But then—— The wind had already stopped. Yet, the white thing was still wriggling. My brother, growing increasingly curious, ran home to get his binoculars. "Let me look first!" He excitedly peered at the object. Before long, his face turned pale, a cold sweat broke out all over his forehead, and finally, he dropped the binoculars. "Brother... what on earth is that?" In a voice that no longer sounded like his own, he answered word by word: "It's... better... if... you... don't... know..."
