Another case of medical violence: Family member yells at nurse for missing appointment slot

A medical violence incident occurred at Keelung Chang Gung Hospital's ophthalmology clinic on the afternoon of October 1st. A patient and their family member, who had a scheduled appointment, missed their ophthalmology examination slot and proceeded to yell loudly at the nursing staff in the examination room. The incident was filmed by other waiting patients and uploaded to social media, sparking heated discussion. According to the hospital, the ophthalmology clinic's procedure requires patients to complete examinations before seeing the doctor, with examination slots available from 12 PM to 4 PM. The patient and their family member arrived at the clinic around 5 PM, after the examination period had ended. The doctor, considering the delay in the clinic's schedule, offered to help arrange another appointment slot. However, the family member refused to accept this and began shouting at the nursing staff, saying things like "We waited so long" and "Who are you kidding?", disrupting the clinic's order. Dr. Chan Yi-Sheng, Vice Superintendent of Keelung Chang Gung Hospital, stated that the hospital immediately initiated its "In-hospital Violence Incident Notification" procedure upon the incident's occurrence, preserved relevant surveillance footage, and continues to provide care and support to the affected staff. The hospital sternly condemns any form of medical violence and urges the public to respect medical professionals and cherish medical resources. Regarding subsequent police action, current public information indicates that the hospital has completed the violence incident notification according to its internal procedures, but no further judicial processing results have been announced. Situations like this happen almost weekly on the front lines of emergency rooms and outpatient clinics. While the law considers whether medical services are obstructed, it's difficult to erase the actual psychological toll on healthcare professionals. The hospital appeals to the public to communicate rationally when seeking medical care and to jointly create a safe and friendly medical environment. Seriously, don't act like a VIP just because you're seeking medical treatment. You're late, and you still have the nerve to blame others? 🙄

Seeing news like this inevitably brings a pang of sadness. Healthcare workers are already immensely drained from protecting lives, and to have to face such unreasonable violence is disheartening. I hope you will join me in calling for reason and respect to be the basic standard for how we treat our hardworking medical staff.

Showing up late and then yelling? That's a big no-no.
