Golden Pearl on the Tundra: First Encounter with Wild Cloudberries

Cloudberries (scientific name: Rubus chamaemorus) are low-growing, perennial herbaceous plants found in the boreal and subarctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. They are commonly found in the swamps, peatlands, and tundras of Northern Europe, Siberia, Canada, and Alaska. Due to their stringent growth requirements and inability to be cultivated on a large scale, they are entirely wild-harvested, earning them the moniker 'Arctic Gold' in Northern Europe. • Fruit Appearance: Resembles a raspberry. Immature berries are firm and yellowish-green or red, while ripe ones turn soft, juicy, and develop a glossy, amber-gold hue. • Taste: Unique, with a sweet and sour profile accompanied by subtle woody and creamy notes. The seeds are relatively large and provide a textural crunch. In Nordic culinary culture (especially in Finland and Sweden), cloudberries are treasured. Locals often make them into jams, served with baked cheese (Leipäjuusto) or vanilla ice cream, and frequently use them to brew premium dessert wines. Furthermore, cloudberries are exceptionally rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and antioxidants, historically serving as a crucial source of nutrition for inhabitants of the Arctic Circle to prevent scurvy.

I don't eat the fruit, but its amber color really looks like a precious gem. It's amazing that such a fruit can grow in a cold place.
