Stop Believing Online Rumors! 'Pushing Your Motorcycle Through a Red Light' to Avoid a Ticket? Be Careful, This Action Could Cos

Turning off your engine at a red light and 'pushing your motorcycle across the road' is still considered running a red light and will result in a fine of $1800 according to the law. According to a recent second-instance ruling by the Taipei High Administrative Court (Case No. 111-Jiao-Shang-123), the key determinations for such behavior are as follows: • Not a Change in Status Due to Power: The crucial factor in determining a red light violation is whether the vehicle crosses the stop line and enters the intersection when facing a red light. Simply shutting off the engine does not transform the controlled state of riding into that of a mere pedestrian. • Impact on Road Safety: Pushing a motorcycle across the stop line into the intersection by human power still affects vehicles traveling normally in other directions and disrupts traffic order. Therefore, pushing a motorcycle with the engine off cannot be used as a means to evade traffic signals. • Current Penalties: According to Article 53 of the current 'Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act,' running a red light on a motorcycle is uniformly fined $1800. If deemed a pedestrian violation (Article 78), the fine is $500. However, according to the current view of adjudication authorities, this deliberate act of evasion will still be directly and heavily penalized as a motorcycle red light violation. Unless the vehicle itself is malfunctioning, arbitrarily crossing the stop line by pushing it when the light is red constitutes a violation.
