Power at Your Fingertips: The Thousand-Year Evolution from Archery Bracers to Qing Dynasty Luxury 'Thumb Rings' (Part 2)
1. Shang, Zhou, and Warring States Periods (Riding and Archery Protective Gear) Form and Material: The forms from this period were mostly horseshoe-shaped or sloped, 'pointed at the front and round at the back,' with grooves for the bowstring. Materials were primarily practical deer bone, ivory, leather, or wood, but a very small number were made of fine jade for royal nobles (e.g., the jade 'she' unearthed from Fu Hao's tomb in Yin Xu). 2. Han and Jin Dynasties (Ritualistic Ornaments) Form and Material: By the Han Dynasty, the practical function further weakened, evolving into 'she-shaped pendants' (also known as 'chicken heart pendants'). It was no longer worn on the finger but became a flat jade pendant with hollowed-out cloud patterns on the side, purely for personal adornment, symbolizing archery skills and noble status. 3. Ming and Qing Dynasties (Division between Civil and Military): • Military Thumb Rings (Practical Type): Mostly made of elk antler, ivory, or ordinary hard animal bone, with a plain, uncarved surface. They were specifically worn on the right thumb during military campaigns, hunting, or martial arts archery to protect the finger. • Civil Thumb Rings (Decorative Type): With the reduction of major wars, thumb rings gradually lost their practical function. Scholars, emperors, and nobles wore them purely for show and play. These types of thumb rings often had exquisite patterns like poetry, landscapes, or dragon motifs engraved on their outer walls. 4. Late Qing Dynasty to Present: (Status Symbol): Form and Material: Manchu-style thumb rings often took a 'cylindrical shape (barrel type)' with uniform thickness top and bottom. Materials completely shifted to extremely luxurious materials such as jade, Hetian white jade, agate, amber, and even gold, silver, or gold-flecked glass. In modern society, thumb rings have entirely degenerated into antique collectibles.
