Why Do We Shed 'Tears of Emotion'?

The brain cries during extreme sadness, but we also find our eyes welling up and tears falling in moments of selfless devotion, overcoming adversity, or resolving misunderstandings. Biologically, this is known as 'psychic crying triggered by noble emotions.' The 'Switch' in Neural Mechanisms: When we witness sacrifices or great love that shake our souls, the brain first experiences a brief period of 'sympathetic nervous system high arousal' (increased heart rate, muscle tension). Subsequently, to protect the cardiovascular system from excessive pressure, the parasympathetic nervous system quickly intervenes, forcibly slowing the heart rate and triggering tear duct secretion. Chemical Composition of Tears: Research has found that these 'tears of emotion' are completely different from the physical tears shed when cutting onions. They contain high concentrations of endorphins (natural painkillers) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). The shedding of tears is the brain's way of 'washing away' the immense psychological pressure that has accumulated in an instant.
