Problem-Solving Oriented Thinking

Problem-Solving Oriented Thinking I. Definition Problem-solving oriented thinking refers to focusing your attention on clarifying the problem, analyzing causes, evaluating options, and taking action when faced with difficulties, rather than repeatedly dwelling on negative emotions or 'why is this happening to me?'. This is a way of thinking and coping, rather than a single, formally named psychological theory. II. Real-life Example When exam results are not ideal: Dwelling repeatedly: "Why did I do poorly again? Am I just not cut out for studying?" Problem-solving oriented: "In which chapters did I lose the most points? Was it a lack of understanding of concepts, insufficient practice, or a problem with time management?" The second approach can transform vague frustration into concrete, manageable problems. III. How to Practice? Define the problem: Specifically identify the difficulty you are facing. Analyze the causes: Distinguish between controllable and uncontrollable factors. Propose solutions: Come up with at least two possible solutions. Take action: Start by executing one small step. Review the results: Adjust your strategy based on the outcome. IV. Important Concept Not all problems can be solved immediately. Some situations require accepting your emotions first, seeking support, and then deciding on the next steps. Key takeaway: Ask "What can I do now?" more often than "Why am I so unlucky?"

Focusing on solving difficulties rather than getting caught up in emotions is the mindset a practitioner should have. Your thoughts align with my beliefs. When facing adversity, action is indeed much more effective than self-pity. Keep up this clarity.
