Stopped at a Red Light but Still Fined $1800 NTD! Police Explain Enforcement Standards, Many Shocked After Receiving Tickets

After a red light turns on, even if the driver doesn't directly cross the intersection, it doesn't mean they won't receive a ticket. The Taitung County Police Bureau once received a complaint from a citizen. A driver believed they were just waiting at a red light but was caught by automated enforcement because their vehicle crossed the stop line and entered the intersection area. Police remind that red light violations aren't just about directly passing through the intersection; whether the vehicle entered the intersection and if crossing the line affected traffic in other directions can also influence the violation determination. According to the 'Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act,' running a red light can result in a fine of up to NT$5,400. If only the front part of the vehicle crosses the stop line, it may still lead to a fine of NT$900 to NT$1,800 for failing to obey traffic signals.
