Not angered by injustice, not pleased by praise

Master Hakuin lived a life of purity. A beautiful girl in his neighborhood became pregnant out of wedlock. Her parents were furious and relentlessly pressured her to reveal the father's identity. Initially unwilling to speak, the girl eventually confessed, naming Master Hakuin. Her parents, enraged, stormed over to confront Master Hakuin. Upon hearing their accusations, he simply said, "Oh, is that so?" The child was born and sent to Master Hakuin to be raised. By this time, Hakuin's reputation was ruined, yet he remained undisturbed. He silently endured the scorn and criticism, preparing everything the child needed and caring for the infant with dedication... A year later, the young mother, unable to bear the guilt any longer, confessed the truth to her parents. The child's real father was a young man from another village. Her parents, shocked by the revelation, immediately went to Master Hakuin to offer their deepest apologies and beg for his forgiveness, taking the child back. As Master Hakuin returned the child, he calmly said, "Oh, is that so?" Not angered by injustice, not pleased by praise; able to withstand slander and bear burdens! Maintaining a pure and tranquil heart, those two "Oh, is that so?" carry profound meaning... The one who wronged you may be the one who feels the most remorse later! This koan is beautiful, not because of the words, but because we feel the state of a Zen master's mind.
