Horror Short Story | Elevator
The building where Shen Jing lives has two elevators, one old and one new. The old one often breaks down, so he's used to taking the new one. One morning, rushing to work, the new elevator was stuck at the top floor and wouldn't come down. Impatient, he pressed the button for the old elevator. The door opened. The interior was dimly lit, the floor covered in old carpet, and it smelled musty. He stepped inside and pressed the button for the first floor. The elevator went down and stopped at the third floor. The door opened, but there was no one outside. He pressed the close button, the door shut, and it continued down. It stopped again at the second floor. Still no one. He felt something was wrong and repeatedly mashed the close button. The door shut, and this time it went straight to the first floor. When the door opened and he stepped out, he glanced back at the old elevator. A person stood inside, back turned to him, wearing a gray coat. He froze. There was no one there just moments ago. The next day, he took the new elevator, but the old elevator's door opened by itself. There was no one inside, but every floor button on the panel was lit up. As if someone had pressed all the floors at once. He didn't dare to ride it and took the stairs down. For the next few days, the old elevator's door would often open by itself. Sometimes in the middle of the night, sometimes when he was walking down the hallway. It was always empty inside, but the button panel was perpetually lit. One day, he worked overtime until very late. When he got home, both elevators were stopped at the top floor. Not wanting to wait, he stepped into the old elevator and pressed the fifth-floor button. The elevator went up and stopped at the second floor. The door opened, but the hallway lights were out, plunging it into darkness. He pressed the close button, but the door didn't move. A voice came from the darkness, very softly: "You pressed the fifth floor, but this elevator only goes up to the fourth." Shen Jing froze.

AuthorShen Jing froze. This building was clearly seven stories high. "From the fourth floor up," the voice said, "is for the people on the other side." The door slowly closed, and the elevator continued upward. It passed the fourth floor without stopping, then the fifth. The floor numbers kept jumping past six, seven, eight... Shen Jing frantically pressed the door-open button, but all the buttons were unresponsive. He looked up at the floor indicator. The numbers had already passed the teens and were still climbing. The elevator finally stopped. The doors opened to a hallway, identical in layout to his own floor. At the end of the hallway was a door with his apartment number on it. He walked over, took out his key, and opened the door. The arrangement inside was identical to his apartment, but everything was mirrored. The sofa on the left was now on the right, the TV on the right was now on the left. Someone in a gray jacket sat on the sofa, his back to Shen Jing. The person turned around. It was himself. "You're finally here," the other Shen Jing said. "I've been waiting a long time. The apartment here is bigger, so you can live on the other side." Shen Jing tried to step back, but the door closed on its own. He turned to look at the door. The apartment number had changed. It wasn't his apartment anymore; it was the one next door. The other Shen Jing walked over and patted him on the shoulder: "Welcome to the apartment next door. From now on, when you take the elevator, just remember to press four."
