After Transmigration, I Became a God by Plundering --- Chapter 22: New Dishes in the Cafeteria (1)
Using my keen sense of smell, I successfully found something within the academy's small grove. Though called small, it wasn't small at all. Besides harmless small animals intentionally released there, there were no cultivated plants. It was about ten hectares in size, but students habitually called it the small grove, and the name stuck. Anyway, I managed to find quite a few edible plants in the small grove, such as wild potatoes and sweet potatoes in the soil, as well as wild onions, ginger, garlic, and even seasonings like chili peppers and Sichuan peppercorns, not to mention wild vegetables and fruits. To me, this small grove was essentially a natural, fresh grocery shelf, the kind you get for free. So, one day, after discussing with the person in charge of managing the cafeteria, I successfully obtained some fattier pork. I separated the pork fat from the lean meat. During the cafeteria's break time, I borrowed tools and rendered some lard. After cutting the pork fat into strips and boiling it with water until the water evaporated, the lard naturally remained. Once the crispy pork cracklings were removed, I added washed wild onions, ginger, garlic, and a bit of old wine obtained from Chen Wansan's tomb to remove the gamey smell, then filtered and cooled it. Lard isn't fried as it might seem; it's rendered. Lard rendered this way not only freezes whiter when cooled but also is less prone to splattering during cooking. The rendered pork cracklings are also more aesthetically pleasing and crispy.
