Green Wings Reborn: The Miracle of the Puerto Rican Parrot's Return to the Skies from 'Just 13 Left'
The Puerto Rican parrot (scientific name: Amazona vittata), known as 'iguaca' in the local indigenous language, is a bird endemic to Puerto Rico and the only native parrot species still existing within the United States. It is currently listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. • Physical Characteristics: Approximately 30 cm in length, its body is covered in bright green feathers. The most distinctive markings are a vivid red patch on its forehead and a white eye-ring around its eyes, with deep blue flight feathers. • Ecology and Habits: They practice monogamy and prefer nesting in natural tree hollows, feeding primarily on fruits, berries, and seeds from the forest. • Extinction Crisis: In the 19th century, there were a million parrots on the island, but due to the destruction of 99% of the original forests, predation by introduced species, and frequent hurricane strikes, their numbers plummeted drastically. By 1975, the wild population had fallen to a mere 13 individuals, bringing them to the brink of extinction. • Conservation Status: Through long-term captive breeding and reintroduction programs promoted by the US and local governments, the population has gradually recovered to several hundred individuals. However, due to extremely low genetic diversity and extreme hurricanes caused by climate change (such as Hurricane Maria in 2017), their survival in the wild still faces severe challenges.
