A Manga I Strongly Recommend to Younger Generations
"Kenji" This is a legendary martial arts manga that was the biggest catalyst for the "Hakkōryū (Baguazhang)" and "Authentic Chinese Martial Arts" boom in Japan. The story follows the protagonist, a young boy named Kenji Gou, who becomes fascinated with the world of martial arts through Hakkōryū, taught to him by his grandfather. It depicts his growth, both mentally and physically, as he encounters various masters and rivals. It distinguishes itself from typical fighting manga, which often focus on defeating enemies to become the strongest or competing in destructive power. Throughout the series, it consistently presents the teachings of "martial virtue" – "What is martial arts learned for?" and "How should one live as a person?" Through intense training and battles, Kenji cultivates not only the profoundness of the techniques but also a compassionate heart, etiquette, and self-discipline. It's a classic coming-of-age story that leaves readers with a refreshing sense of accomplishment. The manga meticulously depicts the characteristics of various martial arts styles, including not only Hakkōryū but also Tai Chi, Xing Yi Quan, Baguazhang, Shaolin Kung Fu, and Praying Mantis Kung Fu, as well as various weapons, making it dense enough to be read as a "martial arts textbook." I truly hope the current generation, immersed in digital technology, will read this work.
