Kimchi

Kimchi is one of Korea's representative traditional foods, which has evolved into various forms over a long period. It wasn't always the red kimchi we know today from the beginning. In the past, vegetables were salted or preserved in soy sauce, vinegar, etc., and this method evolved as a way to eat vegetables even in the cold winter. Through the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties, methods and ingredients for making kimchi gradually diversified. Especially in the late Joseon period, as chili peppers began to be widely used, the red kimchi we are familiar with today started to be made. With the use of various ingredients such as napa cabbage, radish, garlic, ginger, and salted seafood, different kimchi cultures emerged in each region. Kimchi is not just a side dish but an important traditional food that showcases Korea's dietary life and preservation culture. In 2013, 'Kimjang,' the culture of making and sharing kimchi together, was designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. As times change, the types and recipes of kimchi continue to evolve, but kimchi made together by family or neighbors

Ganggangsullae

Ganggangsullae is a representative traditional folk game and song of Korea, a cultural practice enjoyed especially during holidays like Chuseok. It typically involves women holding hands, forming a circle, and singing and dancing, or engaging in various other games together. Ganggangsullae has been passed down mainly in the coastal regions of Jeollanam-do and was often performed on bright moonlit nights, such as during Jeongwol Daeboreum or Chuseok. Depending on the tempo of the song, participants might start by walking slowly and then gradually speed up, or they might mix in various movements and games. Beyond being a simple game, Ganggangsullae also holds the meaning of bringing people together and fostering community harmony. It was designated as a National Intangible Cultural Property in 1966 and was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. It seems to hold even more significance as a traditional Korean culture that has been passed down for a long time. Even today, one can experience Ganggangsullae through performances and traditional cultural events.

What is the oldest national flag in the world?

You might think it's the Japanese flag, created in 701. However, it differs from the Hinomaru flag we know and wasn't officially used for a long time. The Hinomaru flag was actually created in 1870. (As a side note, the Rising Sun Flag, which many of us are familiar with, wasn't a national flag; it was a military flag used by the Army and Navy.) So, what is the oldest national flag? The oldest national flag is the Danish flag, Dannebrog, created in 1219.

Philosopher's Stance - Confucianism

Confucius He is a Chinese philosopher who laid the ideological foundation of Confucianism. Confucianism places the utmost importance on the practice of 'Ren' (仁), which means humanity and a sincere heart that loves and cares for others. Confucius proposed 'Chung' (忠) and 'Seo' (恕) as concrete methods to practice this Ren. Chung refers to a sincere attitude of being truthful to oneself, while Seo means an attitude of consideration for others, stating, "Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire (己所不欲 勿施於人)." Furthermore, he viewed 'Ye' (禮), or propriety, as the social manifestation of the heart of Ren. He argued that when individuals practice both Ren and Ye together, they can achieve not only their own moral perfection but also order and harmony in their families and society as a whole.

Element Story - Cesium Edition

Cesium is an element with atomic number 55, belonging to Group 1 alkali metals on the periodic table. It's a very soft, silvery metal with a low melting point of about 28.5℃, allowing it to melt near room temperature. It's highly reactive, rapidly reacting with air and violently with water, so it doesn't exist in its pure form in nature but is found in compounds. Cesium's property of easily releasing electrons is utilized in devices like photocells and vacuum equipment. Notably, the Cesium-133 isotope is used as the standard for atomic clocks. Cesium atomic clocks enable highly accurate time measurements, playing a crucial role in establishing international time standards. Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope, is produced during nuclear fission and is used in industrial measurement equipment and radiation research, but requires safe management due to its strong radiation emission. In the universe, cesium is formed through processes like stellar nucleosynthesis and neutron capture. Analyzing cesium isotopes helps in studying the formation of heavy elements and stellar evolution.

Element Story - Xenon

Xenon is element number 54, an inert gas belonging to Group 18 of the periodic table. It exists as a colorless, odorless gas at room temperature and, due to its stable electron configuration, rarely reacts with other elements. It's found in very small amounts in Earth's atmosphere and can be obtained through the fractional distillation of liquid air. Xenon emits a bright blue-white light when electrically discharged, making it useful for special lighting and high-intensity discharge headlamps in automobiles. Additionally, xenon has anesthetic properties and has been studied in the medical field. Xenon-133, a radioactive isotope, is utilized in tests for lung function. In space, xenon is present in the atmospheres and internal materials of planets and asteroids. The isotopic ratios of xenon provide crucial clues for studying the formation of Earth and the solar system, as well as changes in the early atmosphere. Notably, some xenon isotopes are produced from the decay of radioactive elements, making them important subjects of research in geology and planetary science.

Trivia 3

1. Belgium has one of the longest tram lines in the world. The Coastal Tram runs for about 68 km along the Belgian North Sea coast. 2. There are very few mosquitoes in Iceland. Due to the cold climate and environmental conditions, mosquitoes are known to have difficulty establishing themselves. 3. Sri Lanka used to have a mailbox specifically for elephants. In areas where elephants frequently passed through villages in the past, there are cases where places for feeding elephants were used like mailboxes. 4. The UK officially has a 'Chief Mouser'. There's a long-standing tradition at the UK government's official residence of keeping cats to catch mice. 5. Singapore is both a city-state and an island nation. While it's a single sovereign country, it consists of a main island and several smaller islands.

Element Story - Tin Edition

Tin is an element with atomic number 50, belonging to Group 14 in the periodic table. It's a relatively soft metal with a silvery-white luster, a melting point of about 232°C, and is quite resistant to corrosion in air. Tin easily forms alloys with other metals, which is why it has long been used as a material for bronze and solder. In particular, plating iron or steel surfaces with a thin layer of tin prevents corrosion and is utilized in food cans and food packaging. It's also used in solder for connecting electronic circuits and in the manufacturing of various chemical products. Tin's crystal structure can change with temperature, and at very low temperatures, it can transform into gray tin. Naturally, it is primarily extracted from the mineral cassiterite and can be found alongside elements like copper and tungsten. In the universe, tin is generated through processes such as stellar nucleosynthesis, supernova explosions, and neutron capture. Various isotopes of tin provide crucial information for studying the processes by which heavier elements are formed.
