Yingning devises a plan to punish him, but it leads to the neighbor's accidental death and a lawsuit. Afterward, her mother-in-law scolds her, saying her excessive laughter caused trouble. Yingning then realizes the dangers of the human world and the constraints of social etiquette, and from then on, she 'never laughed again,' completing a painful transformation from a 'forest sprite' to a 'worldly daughter-in-law.' Pu Songling laments at the end that the world is full of fake and sycophantic smiles, while Yingning's genuine, heartfelt laughter is not accepted by society. On the surface, this story is a romantic tale of a fox spirit's marriage, but it actually embodies the author's praise for the natural expression of human nature and his helpless satire of feudal etiquette suppressing it.

The 'Reply to Su Wu' is a famous lyrical letter in the history of Chinese literature, said to be a reply from the renowned general Li Ling of the Western Han Dynasty to his friend Su Wu, who remained steadfast and unyielding in the Xiongnu territory for nineteen years. In the letter, Li Ling, filled with grief and indignation, makes a heartfelt defense of his surrender to the Xiongnu. He vividly describes the desperate situation at the Battle of Junjishan, where he led five thousand infantry deep into enemy territory, fought fiercely against tens of thousands of Xiongnu main forces, and was ultimately left with 'no arrows and no provisions, with no reinforcements arriving.' At the same time, he condemns the Western Han court's ruthless execution of his entire family and expresses sincere admiration and shame for Su Wu's noble integrity in 'digging for wild rats and swallowing animal fur' yet refusing to surrender. However, this letter has sparked a major historical controversy regarding its authenticity. Later scholars, such as Su Shi and Hong Mai, generally suspected that the letter was a forgery by later generations. There are two main points of doubt: 1. Discrepancy in literary style: The letter's prose, combining parallel couplets and prose, is extremely ornate and lyrical, carrying a strong flavor of Six Dynasties literature, which is vastly different from the simple and unadorned style of the Western Han period. 2. Factual inconsistencies: Some details mentioned in the letter contradict the records in the 'Biographies of Li Guang and Su Jian' in the Book of Han. Currently, the academic community tends to believe that this letter was not personally written by Li Ling, but rather a piece created by literati during the Wei, Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties periods. They may have admired the two men's integrity, or perhaps, feeling unrecognized and lamenting their own circumstances, they wrote it in Li Ling's voice. Nevertheless, its literary value and the tragic emotions it conveys remain undiminished.

Li Ling, courtesy name Shaoqing, was a famous general of the Western Han Dynasty and the grandson of the renowned general Li Guang. He was skilled in archery and cared for his soldiers, initially earning the favor of Emperor Wu of Han. The most famous turning point in his life was the Battle of Junji Mountain in the second year of Tianhan (99 BC). He led 5,000 infantry deep into the Xiongnu territory, only to be surrounded by the main force of 30,000 Xiongnu cavalry led by the Chanyu himself. Li Ling commanded with composure, using repeating crossbows and the terrain to kill thousands of enemies. The Xiongnu then reinforced their troops to 80,000. Li Ling fought and retreated, engaging in a desperate battle for several days. Facing the brink of starvation, with no hope of reinforcements, and with some of his subordinates betraying him by leaking military information, he ultimately failed to break through and was unfortunately captured and surrendered. Emperor Wu of Han, misled by rumors that Li Ling was training troops for the Xiongnu, was enraged and ordered the extermination of Li Ling's entire clan (his mother, wife, and children were all killed). At that time, only the Grand Astrologer Sima Qian defended him, and Sima Qian consequently suffered castration. Upon learning that his entire family had been killed, Li Ling completely abandoned any thought of returning to the Han Dynasty and remained with the Xiongnu. The Chanyu greatly valued him, marrying his daughter to him and enfeoffing him as the Right School King. Later, although the Han Dynasty sent his friend Huo Guang and others to persuade him to return, Li Ling refused, citing his fear of 'being insulted again.' In 74 BC, Li Ling died of illness in Xiongnu, leaving behind a touching legend of his parting with Su Wu.

Swinhoe's softshell turtle (Rafetus swinhoei), also known as the Yangtze giant softshell turtle or Chinese softshell turtle, is one of the largest freshwater turtles in the world and is currently the most critically endangered species globally. Their carapace can exceed 1 meter in length and their weight can surpass 100 kilograms. They are characterized by unique yellow spots and patterns on their head and carapace. Historically, Swinhoe's softshell turtles were widely distributed in the lower Yangtze River basin, Taihu Lake region in China, and the Red River basin in Vietnam. However, due to human overfishing, habitat destruction (such as dam construction), and water pollution, their wild populations have drastically declined over the past few decades. The reproduction of Swinhoe's softshell turtle faces immense challenges. The number of surviving individuals globally is extremely scarce, possibly countable on a few fingers, and they are primarily found in wild lakes in Vietnam. Although scientists have discovered individual turtles in Vietnam in recent years, finding a mate and achieving artificial breeding remains complex and difficult. Each known individual's death brings this species one step closer to 'extinction in the wild'. Swinhoe's softshell turtle is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is considered a 'living fossil' and the most urgent conservation priority for preserving Earth's biodiversity. It seems there are only two left, both males, one in China and one in Vietnam.
