In 1982, someone at Knickerbocker Toy Co. came up with what seemed like a perfect idea: let kids imitate E.T.'s famous glowing finger. 👽 And so, the 'E.T. Finger Light' model 4111 was born, designed for children aged 4 and up. It was a flesh-colored rubber cover that you'd slip onto your finger, and when you pressed your finger against an object, a small light at the fingertip would illuminate thanks to its built-in battery. On paper, it sounded like a cute idea. But in reality, its slender shape and wrinkled texture ended up looking a little too much like something else entirely – and it had nothing to do with Spielberg's movie. Parents started noticing, jokes quickly followed, and toy stores began pulling the product from shelves almost as fast as it had arrived. Knickerbocker closed its doors the same year, and this finger light became one of those items collectors now seek out specifically for a chuckle.🛸

Plugs into the soil to generate electricity: Mushroom-shaped 'Bacterial Battery' captures microbial electrons around the clock Researchers at the University of Bath and the startup Bactery have developed a 'Bacterial Battery' utilizing 'soil microbial fuel cell' technology. This device, when inserted into the soil, precisely captures electrons released by bacteria decomposing organic matter. It possesses the characteristic of self-charging day and night, making it a potential perfect complement to solar power. Everyday soil transformed into green energy: University of Bath collaborates with startup to develop bacterial battery The soil beneath our feet holds the potential to be transformed into green energy. The University of Bath, in collaboration with the startup Bactery, has developed a 'Bacterial Battery' that resembles a mushroom. This device ingeniously utilizes the electrons released by microorganisms in the soil as they break down organic matter, successfully converting them into usable electricity for daily life. These unique devices, plugged into the soil, could potentially replace the time-consuming and costly disposable batteries or solar panels used on remote farms in the future. In the future, perhaps just using your home's flowerbeds could save you a significant amount on your electricity bills.
