Legend of the Tang People - Biography of Jiang Zong and the White Ape (Part 5)

Searching his possessions, treasures were abundantly stored, and delicacies filled the display, arranged on tables. Whatever was treasured in the human world was completely equipped. Several bushels of fine incense, a pair of precious swords, and thirty-odd women, all of peerless beauty, some having been there for up to ten years. He said: "When their beauty fades, they will surely be taken away, and I know not where they will be placed. Moreover, the ones I capture are only myself, with no companions. In the morning, I wash my face, put on a hat, and wear a white unlined robe. I wear silk clothes, knowing neither cold nor heat. My whole body is covered in white fur, several inches long. Where I live, I often read wooden slips, the characters like talismans, completely illegible. When finished, I place them under a stone step; on clear days, I sometimes dance with twin swords, spinning around my body like lightning, the light round like the moon. My diet is irregular; I enjoy eating fruits and nuts, and especially love dogs, chewing and drinking their blood. As soon as the sun passes noon, I vanish instantly. I travel thousands of miles in half a day and must return by evening; this is my routine. Whatever I need is obtained immediately; at night, I frolic with the women in various beds, visiting them all in one night, never having slept. My speech is coherent, and I gain advantage through eloquent words. However, my form is that of a gibbon-like creature. Early this year, when the leaves fell, I suddenly said with sorrow: 'I have been accused by the mountain god and will face a death sentence. I also seek protection from the spirits, hoping to be spared.' A month before this, a stone step gave birth to a stone, burning my slips. I said in dismay: 'I have lived for a thousand years without a child, and now I have one, my death is imminent.' Then I looked at the women, many of whom wept for a long time. I also said: 'This mountain is steep and inaccessible, and no one has ever reached it. Looking up from the heights, I see no woodcutters at all. Below are many tigers, wolves, and strange beasts. If I can reach here now, is it not by divine providence?' Huo took the jade treasures, precious items, and all the women, and returned with them, but some still knew his home. Huo's wife gave birth to a son after a year, who resembled him. Later, Huo was executed by Emperor Wu of Chen. (Huo) was originally good friends with Jiang Zong and loved his son, who was exceptionally intelligent, so he kept and raised him, thus he escaped disaster. When he grew up, he indeed excelled in literature and calligraphy, becoming famous in his time. He published 'Continued Biography of the Jiang Family'.

Tales of Tang Dynasty - The Legend of Baiyuan, Part 4

As dusk fell, something like a bolt of white silk flew from beyond the mountains, entering the cave as if in flight. Shortly after, a handsome man with a long beard, over six feet tall, dressed in white and carrying a staff, emerged with several women. Seeing the dog, they stared in surprise, then leaped upon it, tearing it apart, sucking its blood, and eating their fill. The women offered wine in jade cups, laughing merrily. After drinking several bushels, they helped the man away. Laughter was heard again. After a while, the women came out and beckoned, and he entered with weapons. They saw a large white ape, its four legs tied to the head of a bed. It looked at the people, shrinking and struggling to break free, its eyes flashing like lightning. They attacked it with weapons, but it was like hitting iron. When they stabbed below its navel, the blade sank in, and blood spurted out. He sighed deeply and said, "Heaven kills me, not you. However, your mate is already pregnant; do not kill the child. When you meet the sage emperor, he will surely bring great honor to your lineage." With these words, he died.

Tales of Tang People - The Legend of the White Ape Who Supplemented Jiang Zong

The women said, "We have been with your wife for nearly ten years. This is where the divine creature resides; it has the power to kill people, and even a hundred soldiers with weapons cannot subdue it. Fortunately, it has not yet returned, so it is best to flee quickly. Just procure two measures of fine wine, ten dogs, and several dozen pounds of hemp, and we will conspire to kill it. It will surely come after noon, so be careful not to be too early. Let ten days be the deadline." Then they urged him to leave. Gè also retreated hastily and, having procured the strong liquor, hemp, and dogs, went as agreed. The women said, "That creature loves wine and often gets drunk. When drunk, it exerts its strength. If we bind its hands and feet to the bed with silk, it will break them with a single leap. It once tried to tie three strips, but its strength gave out, and it could not untie them. Now, if we bind it with hemp hidden within silk, we believe it will be unable to do so. Its whole body is like iron, but only a few inches below the navel is always protected; this spot will surely not withstand weapons." Pointing to a rock nearby, they said, "This is its food storehouse. Hide here and wait quietly. Place the wine under the flowers and scatter the dogs in the forest. When our plan succeeds, we will call you out." He did as they said and waited, holding his breath.

Legend of the Tang People - The Tale of Bu Jiang Zong and the White Ape (Part 2)

More than a month passed. Suddenly, a hundred miles away, amidst a thicket of bamboo, he found one of his wife's embroidered shoes. Though soaked by the rain, it was still recognizable. Hel You was even more grief-stricken and his search grew more determined. He selected thirty strong men, equipped them with weapons and provisions, and they lived like hermits, foraging in the wilderness. After another ten days or so, they reached a point about two hundred miles from where they had started. Looking south, they saw a mountain that stood out, lush and verdant. Upon reaching its base, they found a deep stream encircling it, so they wove wood to cross. Amidst the sheer cliffs and green bamboo, they occasionally saw red silk and heard sounds of laughter. Grasping vines and using ropes, they climbed to the summit. There, fine trees were planted in rows, interspersed with famous flowers. Below them, the green undergrowth was lush and soft like a carpet. It was a place of clear, profound silence, a world apart. There was a stone gate facing east. Dozens of women, dressed in bright, colorful clothes, were playing, singing, and laughing, coming and going. Upon seeing people, they all looked at them with disdain and stood still for a moment. When Hel You approached, they asked, "Why have you come here?" Hel You explained his situation. The women looked at each other and sighed, saying, "Your virtuous wife has been here for over a month. She is now ill in bed. You should go see her." Entering through the gate, they found doors made of wood. Inside, the space was wide and open, like three halls. Beds were set against the four walls, all covered with brocade. His wife lay on a stone couch, with thick cushions and layered mats, and precious foods piled before her. Hel You approached to look at her. She turned her head and glanced at him, then immediately waved her hand, signaling him to leave.

Tales of Tang Dynasty - The Legend of the White Ape Who Filled the General's Position (1)

A story I saw in the archives. In the late Datong era of the Liang Dynasty, General Pingnan Lin Qin was dispatched on a southern campaign. Upon reaching Guilin, he defeated Li Shigu and Chen Che. His subordinate, Ouyang He, plundered the region, reaching Changle, pacifying all the caves, and venturing deep into treacherous terrain. He's wife was fair and exceptionally beautiful. His men said, "Why is the General bringing such a beauty through this place? There is a spirit that excels at stealing, and it particularly preys on young, beautiful women. You should guard her carefully." He became very suspicious and fearful. That night, he gathered his soldiers to surround her quarters, hid his wife in a secret chamber, and secured it tightly. He then assigned over ten female slaves to guard her. That evening, it rained heavily and was pitch black. By the fifth watch, all was silent. The guards, weary, dozed off. Suddenly, as if startled by something, they awoke to find his wife already gone. The door was still locked as before. No one knew how she had left. Beyond the door lay perilous mountains, and the area was so disorienting that pursuit was impossible. By dawn, there was no trace of her. He was filled with great anger and sorrow, vowing not to return in vain. He then feigned illness, halted his army, and personally scoured the surrounding areas daily, searching the deep mountains and treacherous paths.

Custody and Receipt are Different

Historical Issue: After Japan's defeat in 1945, the Republic of China government accepted Taiwan on behalf of the Allies. However, the Cairo Declaration, Potsdam Proclamation, and Treaty of San Francisco have differing interpretations regarding the legal meaning and attribution of Taiwan's sovereignty. 2. Sovereignty Issue: The Treaty of San Francisco came into effect in 1952, with Japan renouncing its rights to Taiwan and Penghu. However, the treaty does not explicitly designate a recipient nation. Therefore, some argue that the attribution of Taiwan's sovereignty has not yet been definitively settled under international law. 3. Democratic Legitimacy Issue: The Republic of China government initially relocated from mainland China to Taiwan and did not obtain ruling power through direct elections by the Taiwanese people. It was only after democratization that the Taiwanese people gradually determined the composition of their government through elections. It's not National Day, it's a National Calamity.

Chang Geng, Qi Ming

When it appears in the east before dawn, it's called 'Qi Ming'; when it appears in the west at dusk, it's called 'Chang Geng'. Later, ancient people confirmed that Qi Ming and Chang Geng were actually the same star – Venus. So, the 'Venus' we know today was already very familiar to the Chinese thousands of years ago.

Chenxing

In ancient China, Mercury was called 'Chenxing'. Because it always appeared near the sun, it was difficult for ancient people to observe for long periods, giving it a special status in traditional astrology. The 'Records of the Grand Historian: Treatise on Celestial Offices' mentions Chenxing and associates it with 'the North and Water'. As the Five Elements theory gradually matured, Mercury became the representative of 'Water', paired with concepts like the North and Winter. More interestingly, ancient people actually knew that Mercury sometimes appeared before sunrise and sometimes after sunset, and thus divided its observations into different categories. This also shows that ancient China did not simply 'name a bright star when they saw one', but accumulated observational data over a long period. Therefore, a short paragraph can be added to the section on Mercury: 'Mercury was called 'Chenxing' in ancient China because it always moved close to the sun, making it difficult to observe. Ancient Chinese people noticed its appearance patterns early on and incorporated Chenxing into the Five Elements and astrological systems. The later established correspondence of 'Mercury—Water—North' also became part of traditional Chinese cosmology.'

Yam Monster 3

After rescuing their mother, the two brothers prepared to leave the monster's dwelling. Just then, the younger brother suddenly heard a child crying from inside the house. They went in and discovered another child beside their mother. Their mother lowered her head and softly said: "He is... the Yam Monster's child." The two brothers froze. But looking at the child who knew nothing, they couldn't bring themselves to abandon him. The family set off on the road home. The child grew day by day, living with his two older brothers. He would follow them into the mountains and listen to his mother tell stories at night. Yet strangely, he always seemed to gaze towards the distant mountains. One day, the child suddenly asked: "What lies beyond the mountains?" No one answered him. Several more years passed, and the child grew into a young boy. One morning, he stood outside, looking deep into the forest. His mother came to his side. "What are you looking at?" After a long silence, the boy said: "I want to go back." His mother's expression changed. "Go back where?" The boy didn't answer, but turned and ran into the forest. His mother and two brothers rushed after him. But the boy ran faster and faster, eventually disappearing into the dense woods. They never found him again. From then on, people said that although the child grew up in the human world, he ultimately carried the blood of the Yam Monster. When the time came to return, he eventually went back to the mountains.

Yam Monster - 2

Warning - I'm sure this story exists among the Tao people, but my memory is fragmented. This was pieced together through discussions with AI about existing Tao customs and online information, so it might not be exactly the same as the actual story. Please don't take it as fact. The brothers finally found their mother. However, upon seeing them, their mother showed no joy at their reunion. Instead, she urgently pulled the two of them to her side. "Hurry and go! You are no match for him!" She told her children that the Yam Monster possessed boundless strength, that blades and spears could not harm his body, and that he could fly into the sky. The elder brother clenched the knife in his hand. "We won't leave you behind." His mother was silent for a moment, then finally revealed the monster's secret. "Although his body is hard, he fears reeds. The sap of reeds can soften his skin. First, strike him with a reed stalk, and then blades and spears will be able to harm him." She also told the brothers that the monster flew to the sea every noon to catch flying fish. Thus, the brothers cut down several thick reed stalks, sharpened them into spears, and hid beside the house to wait. As the sun slanted westward, the monster's figure finally appeared on the sea. As soon as the monster landed, the younger brother shouted, "Now!" The reed spear flew through the air, piercing deeply into the monster's body. The monster roared and pulled out the spear, only to find his skin softening. "You brats!" The elder brother seized the opportunity, rushed forward, and struck with his knife. This time, the blade finally cut through the monster's body. The monster tried to flap his wings and escape, but the brothers clung to him tightly, one in front and one behind. After a fierce struggle, the Yam Monster finally fell to the ground. His mother was finally free.
