Getting to Know the Incredible Ostrich

The ostrich is the largest and fastest-running bird species alive today, primarily found in the arid savannas and desert regions of Africa. An adult ostrich can reach a height of 2.5 meters and weigh up to 150 kilograms. Despite having enormous wings, their flat breastbones lack a keel, rendering them flightless. Instead, they have evolved extremely powerful legs for defense and locomotion. In terms of defense and survival, an ostrich's legs possess terrifying explosive power, reaching speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour. A single stride can cover approximately 3 to 8 meters, and the force of one kick can be fatal, effectively deterring large predators like lions or cheetahs. Furthermore, an ostrich's eyes are about 5 centimeters in diameter, the largest among all terrestrial vertebrates. Combined with their 1-meter-long neck, this gives them excellent long-distance vision across the vast grasslands, allowing them to detect danger early. The most iconic myth about ostriches is that they 'bury their heads in the sand when they encounter danger.' In reality, this is a completely false stereotype. When an ostrich faces an insurmountable threat or needs to incubate eggs, it lays its long neck flat on the ground, blending its grayish-brown plumage with the surrounding environment to lower its profile for an 'invisibility' effect, making it look like its head is buried in the dirt from a distance.
