On September 9, 2016, researchers discovered that giraffes are composed of multiple distinct species and should be classified into at least four species: the Northern giraffe, Southern giraffe, Reticulated giraffe, and Masai giraffe. There are significant genetic differences between these different giraffe species, and they are reproductively isolated, with virtually no interbreeding occurring in the last 1 to 2 million years.
