Chapter 8: Paper Figures Summoning Souls Ever since the failed life-borrowing attempt, strange occurrences had become frequent at the Shen family mansion. Every midnight, the sound of rustling footsteps, as if someone were walking on the floor in wet cloth shoes, would echo through the estate. On the third night, Shen Tianci lay in bed, suddenly feeling as if a thousand-pound boulder were pressing down on his chest. He opened his eyes and was shocked to find two life-sized paper figures standing by his bedside, appearing out of nowhere! The figures were painted with exaggerated red cheeks, their mouths curved into a grotesque smile, staring intently at him. Shen Tianci tried to scream, but found he couldn't make a sound. The paper figures slowly raised their stiff arms and pointed towards the window. Following their gaze, Shen Tianci saw that the dead tree in the courtyard was now adorned with white paper money, fluttering gently on the windless night. "Give me back my life... Give me back my life..." a mournful cry echoed directly in his mind. Terrified, Shen Tianci lost control of himself and struggled desperately. By the time the guards heard the commotion and broke down the door, Shen Tianci had already fainted. The two paper figures lay stiffly beside him, and astonishingly, two streams of bright red blood-tears were flowing down their faces... To be continued
