The Reciprocal Promise of Happiness: Decoding the Blessings in a Bride's Return Gifts and Traditional Dowry

After receiving the betrothal gifts, the bride's family, based on the traditional principle of 'reciprocity' and blessing the newlywed couple, typically prepares the following dowry and return gifts. 1. On-the-Spot Return Gifts (Returned on the Engagement Day) Return of Betrothal Gifts: If the bride's family does not accept the monetary betrothal gift, they will return the 'big' or 'small' betrothal money to the groom's family on the same day (or accept the small amount and return the big amount). Reciprocal Gift Exchange: A portion (usually half) of the groom's family's 'Six Gifts' or 'Twelve Gifts' is returned, along with gifts prepared by the bride's family. Head-to-Toe Gifts (Groom's Full Outfit): Practical items for the groom from head to toe are returned, typically including a suit, shirt, tie, leather shoes, belt, wallet, and watch. Groom's Gold Jewelry: Gold necklace, ring, or tie clip prepared by the bride's parents for the groom. 2. Practical Dowry (Daily and Newlywed Home Necessities) Newlywed Bedding: Commonly known as 'Ya Chuang' (bed pressing), this includes bed sheets, pillows, and quilts (usually in pairs, symbolizing a lifetime of sleeping together). Appliances and Furniture: Nowadays, the bride's family often purchases some practical appliances (like a TV, refrigerator) or a dressing table for the new home. Suitcase Gifts (Ya Xiang Li): Two red suitcases are prepared, filled with the bride's new clothes, underwear, etc., with a 'suitcase red envelope' placed at the bottom, symbolizing a life of abundance.

3. Traditional Auspicious Wedding Gifts (Symbolizing Protection from Evil and Fertility) Descendant Tub: Includes a chamber pot, washbasin, and bathtub (modern versions often use miniature models), symbolizing a house full of descendants. Rooster and Hen (Bridal Chickens): Composed of one rooster and one hen (modern versions often use figurines/dolls), symbolizing starting a family and growing old together. Dowry Plants: Such as charcoal (representing a prosperous life), lotus and taro (symbolizing many children and grandchildren), and grains.
