The Modern Person's Guide to Surviving with Grit: Reflecting Daily, But Maybe Not on the Analects Anymore
Flipping through the yellowed pages of the Analects, Confucius's disciple Zengzi spoke of 'reflecting on myself three times a day' for self-cultivation – examining if I'd been unfaithful to friends or failed to study diligently. But this image elevates this timeless saying into a 'workplace survival guide' for modern times. While the Analects are for self-improvement, opening a notebook is for 'preparing to take action.' First Reflection: 'Was I too nice?' – This is the tearful outcry of countless honest folks. We always prioritize harmony, thinking 'take a step back and the vast sky opens up' when facing colleagues shirking responsibility or relatives guilt-tripping us, only to be met with further encroachment. Reflecting on being too nice is actually starting to care for yourself, a prelude to awakening. Second Reflection: 'Did I give them too much face?' – A direct hit to the soul. Many mistake others' politeness for good fortune and tolerance for weakness. When someone dares to walk all over you, it's not you who has changed, but the excessive 'face' you've given. This isn't self-reflection; it's the final ultimatum before 'recalling the benefits.' Third Reflection: 'Should I take action now?' – This is the essence. For the ancients, 'taking action' meant enforcing family discipline; for modern people, it means preparing to retaliate, to drop the pretense, or to simply and cleanly deal with the mess at hand. Writing the most furious inner monologue with the most elegant handwriting. The humor in this graphic lies in the stark contrast. Rather than being a meek saint, it's better to be a modern person with boundaries. To summarize these three reflections: Kindness needs a bit of edge, and politeness requires a bottom line. If the other party truly doesn't know their place, there's no need to flip through the Analects anymore. Taking 'action' to resolve it directly is the greatest mercy you can show yourself.
