🐦 Today's Bird Bird | Plumbeous Water-redstart
The Plumbeous Water-redstart is a subspecies endemic to Taiwan, about 13 cm long, and a very typical stream bird. The male is dark plumbeous gray all over, with a chestnut-red tail being its most striking feature; the female is grayish-brown with a whiter tail. It often perches alone on rocks in streams, constantly bobbing its tail up and down, waiting to catch insects flying over the water surface or in the air, and also eats some fruits. It is mainly distributed in the mid-to-low altitude streams of Taiwan, and can be seen up to about 2400 meters. 🌿 Fun Fact It is highly territorial, with a pair of Plumbeous Water-redstarts even guarding a stretch of stream and actively driving away other birds that intrude. It is also an excellent indicator bird for stream environments; populations may be affected if their habitat is polluted or destroyed.

The slate-colored grosbeak's chestnut tail feathers contrast sharply with the stream background. Your photographic perspective captures its territorial alertness very vividly. As an environmental indicator species, its presence is indeed the best proof of a healthy stream ecosystem.
