Taipei City Bird Record

Yesterday afternoon on my way home from work, I saw a bird I hadn't seen before as I was about to cross the road. Its body was entirely black, much like a crow, with a very long tail that ended in a scissor shape. I immediately asked AI what kind of bird it was, and it identified it as a 'Greater Racket-tailed Drongo' (also known as: Black Drongo). Actually, it's a very common urban bird, mainly distributed in low-altitude areas of Taiwan, especially common in farmlands, parks, schools, and urban green spaces. They perch on high-voltage wires, traffic light poles, and the tops of tall trees. The area near my company is relatively open, so there are many birds, giving me more opportunities to observe them. The breeding season for Greater Racket-tailed Drongos is from April to July each year, with June being the peak. During the breeding season, they exhibit highly vigilant nest-guarding behavior. If you get within about 30-50 meters of the center of their nest, they might dive-bomb or swoop down to threaten you and try to drive you away. At other times, they are quiet birds that catch insects and don't bother with you.

So this is a Black-billed Magpie. They look so majestic standing on the lamppost, really spirited. Thanks for the informative explanation. I'll have to be more careful when walking under trees from now on, so I don't get startled by these little guys protecting their nests.

I seem to have a particular interest in birds with long tails. I remember magpies, Taiwan blue magpies, black drongos, long-tailed tits.... Taiwan blue magpies also exhibit nesting behavior during breeding season. I once got very close to photograph their kin and was attacked by a barrage of bird droppings from their companions in the trees. Luckily, I wasn't hit, but ever since then, I've been particularly cautious whenever I see Taiwan blue magpies on the road after a long time (though they are very beautiful). It seems black drongos are also one of the birds to be wary of! (Photo of a Taiwan blue magpie taken near my dorm in June this year, taken very cautiously from across the road)

So it's not a white-tailed dove? White-tailed doves are everywhere.
