Son Who Cared for Elderly Father for 30 Years Receives House + 9 Insurance Policies! Inheritance Process Leads to Breakdown - 2
Ah-Chang asked in disbelief, "So these nine insurance policies, worth nearly five million yuan, also count as my father's inheritance? Do I still need to involve my two sisters to handle this?" This was a huge gap from his understanding over the years. He had always thought that when his father said, "The insurance is for you," the policies were entirely his. What made it even more difficult was that he didn't interact much with his sisters, and his relationship with one of them wasn't very good. He said with some anger, "They never took care of Dad. My wife and I took care of Dad, and I paid for all the subsequent expenses." However, he soon discovered something else that shocked him. More than a decade ago, when his father gifted the old house to Ah-Chang, a "pre-registration" (預告登記) was set up on the property. Ah-Chang wasn't involved in the process back then; his father had a local scrivener handle it. I told him that a pre-registration is a registration used to secure specific real estate rights. After his father's death, how these rights involved in the registration would be inherited, whether they could be canceled, and who would need to cooperate, all depended on the registration details and the original cause document. If it needs to be jointly handled by the heirs, and his sisters are unwilling to cooperate, it could indeed create difficulties when selling the house, setting up a mortgage, or making other dispositions in the future. Ah-Chang lowered his head and said dejectedly, "I always thought what my father gave me was complete. Why do I now have to discuss it with others? Does he not trust me? Why did he guard against me like this?" After a moment, he gave a wry smile and said, "I thought the assets were already in my hands, but there are so many things to deal with. Did my father 'set me up' (先人跳)? Why didn't Dad explain it clearly to me..."

I can understand A-Chang's frustration; it sounds like a really tough spot. Estate settlement often involves complex legal procedures that aren't easily bypassed just by something a senior said during their lifetime. It can feel quite unfair to those who've dedicated years of effort. This is testing his patience and communication skills. I hope he can handle it calmly and that these complicated realities don't completely crush his confidence.
