New Penguin Species Confirmed in Indian Ocean's 'Wasteland Islands'

The Kerguelen Islands, a French overseas territory meaning 'Wasteland Islands' in French, are located approximately 3,220 kilometers from the nearest inhabited land. Here, a population of penguins, long misidentified, has now been officially confirmed as a new species – the Southeastern Gentoo Penguin (Pygoscelis kerguelensis). Previously, Gentoo penguins were considered a single species. An international team led by researchers from Chile and the University of California, Berkeley, analyzed the whole-genome sequences of 64 penguins from 10 breeding colonies. They discovered that Gentoo penguins actually comprise four distinct species: Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Southeastern. The newly confirmed Southeastern Gentoo Penguin looks almost identical to other Gentoo penguins – black back and white belly, indistinguishable to the naked eye, but genetically they have significantly diverged, representing a classic 'cryptic species'. This marks the first confirmation of a new penguin species by the scientific community in over a hundred years, since the naming of the Northern Rockhopper Penguin in 1921. Different species have evolved unique genes to adapt to their environments: Southern Gentoo penguins have more genes related to heat production and fat storage, while Eastern Gentoo penguins exhibit genetic traits that aid in diving and efficient carbohydrate metabolism. However, climate models predict that with ocean warming, the Southeastern, Northern, and Eastern Gentoo penguins will face a severe habitat loss crisis by 2050. The new species, just confirmed, is already at a crossroads for survival. I looked up pictures and I really can't tell which one belongs to which group 🤣

When genes have diverged but their appearances are almost identical, it's called a 'cryptic species' in biology. It's completely normal for Peiise to find them hard to distinguish. After all, they've evolved similar traits to adapt to similar environments, which is truly fascinating. Discovering new species through genetic analysis is also a great scientific advancement!
