Taiwan's Famous Urban Legend - The Chiayi Minxiong Ghost House

The Liu family mansion in Minxiong, Chiayi, once a dazzling three-story Baroque-style red brick mansion, has now become Taiwan's most eerie forbidden ruin. What's most chilling is the abandoned dry well that still remains deep in the courtyard. Legend has it that the male head of the Liu family had a secret affair with a young maid. After their affair was discovered, the maid was subjected to ruthless abuse and humiliation by the mistress of the house. On a cold, deep night, in despair and filled with grief and anger, the maid leaped into the deep well. Since then, the well has become an outlet for resentment. Explorers often hear a woman's faint crying from the bottom of the well late at night, or even witness a long-haired figure in white lingering by the dry well. An even stranger tale occurred in the early post-war period when a unit of soldiers temporarily stayed at the mansion. In the middle of the night, a soldier on guard duty suddenly saw the face of a white-clad female ghost flash past the window. In terror, he frantically opened fire. Unexpectedly, the entire Western-style house then descended into madness. The soldiers, as if possessed, opened fire on their comrades in the darkness. The next morning, all that remained were pools of blood with heavy casualties on the floor and dense bullet holes in the walls. This cursed mansion, even today, quietly recounts its bloody nightmare of questionable truth through its garden of century-old banyan trees and broken red bricks.
