On October 26, 1597, during the Imjin War (Korean: Imjin Waeran; Japanese: Bunroku-Keicho War), Korean Admiral Yi Sun-sin, utilizing the narrow geographical environment of the Myeongnyang Strait along with its special tides and currents, repelled over 130 Japanese warships led by Todo Takatora with just twelve 'panokseon' (turtle ship-like vessels). This battle is known as the Great Victory at Myeongnyang. The victory at the Battle of Myeongnyang effectively cut off Japanese supplies to Jiksan-eup, ultimately leading to the Japanese withdrawal from the Korean Peninsula.
