Mid-Autumn Trilogy・Part Two | "Gui Zhi Xiang" If "Huai Huang" was a journey far away in autumn, "Gui Zhi Xiang" is like standing on high ground, looking back at a city. This piece is inspired by Wang Anshi's "Gui Zhi Xiang • Remembering Jinling." Zide Qin She presents it with flute, erhu, guzheng, pipa, guqin, and great drum, accompanied by orchestral music, transforming the autumn scenery of Jinling, once only existing in lyrics, into a space that can be heard. The guzheng and pipa first bring the scenery before your eyes. One is clear, the other has the grainy texture of plucked strings, adding detail to the mountains, water, flowers, trees, and riverbanks. The addition of the flute draws the gaze further away, the melody constantly extending outwards, so "The clear river is like silk, the green peaks like clusters" is no longer just words, but gains a sense of distance and proximity. After the erhu and guqin appear, the scenery begins to gain human emotion. The bowing sound of the erhu has a more pronounced singing quality, while the guqin is more sparse and tranquil. These two sounds slowly draw the originally magnificent autumn scenery into the human heart. And the great drum and orchestral music bring in the weight of time. They expand the music from the scenery of a city to the scale of history. The more it depicts Jinling's past prosperity, the clearer the desolation of "Six Dynasties' old tales follow the flowing water" becomes. Therefore, the most moving part of "Gui Zhi Xiang" is not just depicting autumn, but allowing "scenery" to gradually transform into "human" sentiment. Although I'm just a casual fan myself, this electrifying song is guaranteed to touch your heart whenever its melody plays. It's very suitable for many game situations. This song also has significance from its specific time context. Before 2001, Taiwan's professional baseball league had just gone through a match-fixing scandal, leading to a generally gloomy atmosphere and a sharp decline in ticket sales. The 34th Baseball World Cup was held in Taiwan in 2001. An opening victory, defeating Italy 6:1, helped bring baseball fans back. The team then advanced to the top four, including a win against South Korea. In the third-place playoff, they shut out Japan 3:0, ultimately winning the bronze medal 🎉. While not the championship, defeating Japan and South Korea, coupled with Chang Chih-chia's complete game shutout and Chen Chin-feng's home run in the bronze medal game, were all memorable moments for baseball fans. This Mid-Autumn Festival, I plan to introduce three songs. I will write the introductions seriously. Mid-Autumn Trio, Part 1 | "Huai Huang" "Huai Huang" signifies deep autumn and a distant journey. Zide Qin She uses the guzheng and dizi to first paint a close-up autumn scene. The guzheng's plucked strings are crisp and granular, while occasional slides prevent the sound from merely resting on the strings, like wind rustling through branches, leaving behind fragmented yet lingering echoes. The dizi's breath weaves through, and as the melody drifts further, the scene before you gains depth. Nearby are the shadows of pagoda trees, in the distance the autumn wind, and within it, a person. Then, as orchestral instruments gradually join, the space originally belonging to just two instruments is slowly pushed open. The strings lay out the breadth of heaven and earth, while the winds and low voices support the distance, making a solitary journey suddenly no longer just "solitary." Thus, heaven and earth become vast, and the person, in contrast, appears even smaller. This is perhaps what makes "Huai Huang" most moving: it doesn't directly speak of "homesickness," but first lets you see autumn. Yet, the farther you go, the more easily each scene before your eyes becomes a reflection of home. The guzheng depicts the near view, the dizi the distant wind, and the orchestra the world. And the person standing within this world finally hears their own homesickness. To the wanderer far from home, do you miss home?
