Geological Features That Exacerbated the 921 Earthquake's Damage
Extremely Shallow Hypocenter: The earthquake's hypocenter was only 8 kilometers deep, classifying it as a very shallow earthquake. The energy propagated to the surface over a very short distance, causing extremely violent shaking acceleration (maximum intensity of 7) on the ground in central Taiwan. Rare, Massive Slip Amount: Geologically, the northern section of the Chelungpu Fault (around areas like Fengyuan and Pifeng Bridge in Taichung) experienced concentrated stress. This resulted in a vertical uplift of the ground surface by 9 to 12 meters, and the displacement along the underground rupture plane may have reached 14 meters, setting a rare global record for a massive slip at the time. Asymmetrical Damage Range: Due to it being an east-dipping reverse fault, the earthquake's energy was primarily borne by the eastern hanging wall (areas like Nantou, Dongshi in Taichung, and the mountainous regions of Puli). Consequently, surface destruction, building collapses, and landslides were significantly more severe in the hanging wall areas compared to the footwall.

Squid Trivia
They live once and then collectively perish: Most squid have very short lifespans (typically 1 to 2 years). They are 'semelparous' creatures, meaning they mate and lay eggs only once in their lifetime. After completing their reproductive mission, their bodies rapidly age, leading to mass death shortly thereafter. They 'taste' with their feet: The suckers on a squid's tentacles not only grip but are also packed with highly sensitive chemoreceptors. In other words, if they touch something with their tentacles, they can immediately 'taste' whether it's a tasty shrimp or an inedible rock.

Blended Grain Whisky: By now, you should find whisky labels quite easy to understand. 'Blended Grain' is made by 'blending' 'Single Grain' whiskies from multiple distilleries. As production is relatively scarce, 'Blended Grain' whisky is also the rarest type on the market. Blended Whisky: Finally, the common 'Blended' whisky is a blend of one or more 'Single Grain' whiskies and 'Single Malt' whiskies. Currently, almost all of the top 10 best-selling Scotch whiskies worldwide are blended whiskies. Blended Malt Whisky: Once you understand the meaning of 'Single Malt,' 'Blended Malt' is easy to grasp. It's made by 'blending' 'Single Malt' whiskies from multiple distilleries. Additionally, there's a related law in the UK that stipulates 'Malt' whisky can only use pot stills. If a continuous still is used, even if the raw material is 100% malted barley, it can only be labeled as 'Grain' whisky. Single Grain Whisky: Here, 'Single' also refers to a single distillery. Basically, any whisky that doesn't meet the 'Malt' production standards is a 'Grain' whisky. Commonly, these are whiskies made using corn, wheat, and occasionally rye as raw materials, or malt whiskies that do not use pot stills as mentioned above. Due to the raw materials and stills, these whiskies typically have short production cycles, high volume production, and low costs. They are mostly used as blending ingredients by blended whisky distilleries, and it's rare for distilleries to bottle and sell them directly on the market. However, regardless, they must be labeled as 'Grain' whisky.

Single Malt Whisky: 'Single Malt' is probably the most common Scotch whisky designation on the market. Judging solely by the literal meaning, one might think it means using only a single type of malt to make the spirit. However, 'Single' and 'Malt' should be viewed separately. 'Single' refers to being produced by a single distillery; 'Malt' refers to the raw material being malted barley. Single Cask (Single Single Malt): In the operations of most distilleries, the master blender must regularly 'examine' all the oak casks of stored spirits in the cellar. This includes periodically taking samples from the casks to taste the condition of the new spirit and observe the maturation process. Before bottling the whisky, the master blender, based on taste differences, blends spirits from various casks produced within the distillery and adds water to create a whisky that maintains consistent distillery quality and flavor. If 'Single Malt' means tasting the different flavor profiles of each distillery, then 'Single Cask' represents the smallest unit of difference that naturally arises between individual casks. When a master blender decides to bottle a 'Single Cask', all information is meticulously recorded. The type of cask, cask number, bottling date, number of bottles, and the individual bottle number of the single cask will all be important label information. These single cask whiskies, due to their limited production, distinct and unique style, and irreproducible nature, naturally have a higher value. Links to parts due to character limits are in the comments.

Classification of Scotch Whisky - 1
Whisky is a general term for distilled spirits made from fermented grains, with strict production standards and classifications in various countries. While different countries or distilleries may use various grains such as barley, wheat, corn, or rye for their production methods, the typical whisky-making process involves fermenting and distilling grains, followed by aging in white oak casks. Scotch Whisky (Scotch) is legally defined into five major categories: 'Single Malt', 'Single Grain', 'Blended Malt', 'Blended Grain', and 'Blended'.
