Sand Plain🏜️

The Japanese word '砂原' is read as: 砂原 (Sunahara) It means a field covered in sand, a large sandy area. '砂' can be read as 'suna', but its on'yomi (Sino-Japanese reading) can also be 'sa'. Words like '砂漠 (sabaku)' (desert) and '砂丘 (sakyuu)' (sand dune) use this reading. Interestingly, when '砂原' is used as a Japanese surname, some people actually read it as: 砂原 (Sahara) ...Wait, Sahara? 🤔 The world's largest hot desert, the Sahara Desert, has 'Sahara' which originates from the Arabic word صحراء (ṣaḥrāʾ), meaning 'desert' itself. So on one hand: 砂 (Sand) + 原 (Plain) → Sahara And on the other hand: Sahara → Desert There's currently no evidence suggesting a etymological relationship between the two, and it's likely just a very curious cross-linguistic coincidence. ...Is it really just a coincidence? 👀

Chinese in Japanese

You all probably know that Chinese in Japanese is 中国語(ちゅうごくご). Then, do you also know there's another term called 台湾華語(たいわんかご)? Simply put, it mainly distinguishes between simplified and traditional characters, and also the accent of the language. When foreigners learn Chinese and buy a book labeled '中国語', the content taught might not necessarily be Taiwanese Chinese. However, if you buy a book labeled '台湾華語', it will definitely teach Taiwanese Chinese😊 Actually, I only started seeing the term '台湾華語' online in the past few years. I've looked up information about when this usage began, and Google says it started in 2010. But when I was learning Japanese back then, I had never even heard of this term. To me, it appeared very suddenly, just like ぴえん🥺, it just popped up out of nowhere😂 Language is something that evolves, so we must constantly learn new things. Otherwise, many words will slowly become dead languages. Watching and listening more online can help us learn new things and improve😁 Lastly, I think the term '台湾華語' might not be very widespread in Japan yet. Most people probably still know the term '中国語'. However, people who are learning or researching languages would likely know about '台湾華語'. So, in the future, when someone asks you what language you speak, we'll have one more option to answer with~😆

🐱 Japanese for "Cat"

Found out the bulletin board was renamed to "Nyan Nyan Japanese Class," so cute 🥰 Let's talk about various cat terms in Japanese 😆 🐾 猫(ねこ) The most standard "cat." 🐾 猫ちゃん(ねこちゃん) An affectionate and cute way to call them, similar to "kitty" or "kitty-cat." 🐾 にゃんこ "Nyan" is the sound a cat makes, and this is a cute, somewhat childish term for a cat. Often used in social media, anime, or mobile game titles. For example: In "Natsume's Book of Friends," Natsume calls Nyanko-sensei (にゃんこ先生) "The Battle Cats" in Japanese is "にゃんこ大戦争" 🐾 にゃんにゃん Besides meaning the "meow meow" sound, it can also be used directly to refer to cats. So, when you see a cat, you don't always have to just say "neko"! Neko! Neko-chan! Nyanko! 🐈💨
