🌙 The moon is beautiful, isn't it?
🌙 "The moon is beautiful, isn't it?" Legend has it that when Meiji-era novelist Natsume Soseki translated the English phrase "I love you" into Japanese, (as direct confessions were not common among conservative Japanese at the time) he used the indirect expression "月が綺麗ですね" (Tsuki ga kirei desu ne) to convey his feelings. [Responses] *If accepting: "I could die happy." Futabatei Shimei is famous for translating "I love you" into this phrase when translating Russian literature. "The moon has been beautiful for a long time." (Meaning: "I've loved you for a long time too.") "Can we watch it together tomorrow too?" (Meaning: "I want to be with you forever.") *If rejecting: "I can't see the moon." (Meaning: "I have no feelings for you.") "It's beautiful precisely because it's out of reach." (Meaning: "You are someone unattainable.") "It's cloudy and I can't see it." (Implying: "Our hearts are not in sync.") ps, this phrase was also referenced in the Japanese drama [Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu] (We Married as a Job). You can try using it when confessing to a Japanese person. (The poster has experience with this w

Tenchi Muyo (天地無用)
1. 'Tenchi Muyo' (天地無用) is a Japanese four-character idiom (yojijukugo) meaning 📦⬆ 'Do Not Invert' or 'Strictly Do Not Turn Upside Down'. It's often printed on Japanese logistics packages or boxes to remind handlers [This Side Up]. Tenchi (天地): Refers to the top⬆ and bottom⬇ of an item. Muyo (無用): Used here in an archaic or prohibitive sense, meaning 'no need to do this' or 'forbidden to do this'. 2. [Tenchi Muyo!] - 90s Anime (Ouch) Quoted from @VL 'Recommended Song: Tenchi Muyo! Japanese Words Taiwanese People Often Misunderstand
Many Japanese words contain kanji, so people who understand Chinese tend to guess their meanings. Some indeed mean what they literally look like, but many have completely different meanings from Chinese! Here are a few examples: Kanji | Pronunciation | Meaning ---|---|--- 床(ゆか) | floor 娘(むすめ) | daughter 愛人(あいじん) | lover (mistress/affair partner) 人参(にんじん) | carrot 心中(しんじゅう) | suicide (often implying mutual suicide) or self-harm 夢中(むちゅう) | absorbed in, passionate about something There are many words like these, and they can be quite a trap for Japanese beginners XD

'Pine' and 'Wait' are Both 'Matsu'
Maybe it's just a little bit of fluff 👻 The 'matsu' in pine tree (松) is 'matsu' (まつ). The 'matsu' for 'to wait' (待つ) is also 'matsu' (まつ). In Japan, there's an ancient belief that pine trees are where deities alight when they descend, like the 'kadomatsu' (門松) at New Year's, which signifies welcoming the Toshigami (歳神, deity of the New Year). And since 'pine' (matsu) and 'to wait' (matsu) happen to sound the same, it led to the association of 'waiting for the deity's arrival'. So when you see a pine tree... It might be 'waiting' (待つ). As for who it's waiting for, that remains unknown 👻🌲

The Lost Gojūon: ゑ
Update: Thanks to the moderator for the additional info. I forgot to save one for the 'wa' row: を wo 😭 - Original: I heard this from someone who passed N1 before. ゑ (pronounced 'we') is a lost sound from the Gojūon (Japanese syllabary). Apparently, there were originally wa/wi/wu/we/wo. But later, only わ (wa) remained. However, due to recent subculture trends, young people have started using this sound again.
