National Disaster Preparedness Day

National Disaster Preparedness Day Alert: Today marks [921 National Disaster Preparedness Day](https://ltn.com.tw/news/life/breakingnews/5580712 "921 National Disaster Preparedness Day"), and the Central Weather Administration began issuing multiple waves of national-level alert tests for earthquakes and tsunamis starting at 9:21 AM. High school students and the public across Taiwan also participated in the drills. The earthquake on 9/21 is truly memorable. It's important to learn more about how to respond during a disaster!!

Tropical Disturbance

There's a tropical disturbance near Guam that might affect Taiwan over the weekend. However, it's still a ways off, so it's not certain if it will impact Taiwan. We'll need to observe it long-term to be more sure. Software used: windy I hope this disturbance doesn't turn into a typhoon and mess with Taiwan during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday.

Autumn

Autumn has arrived. The temperature difference between day and night is getting bigger. It's scorching hot during the day with the sun shining brightly, but the temperature is cool and pleasant at night. You still need to be careful not to catch a cold. But a bright sunny day is much better than a gloomy one all day long. The picture is of a stray cat I took yesterday before having a barbecue.

Sunny Weather, Mid-Autumn BBQ Fun, Let's Go!

Weather experts point out that due to the 'Autumn Tiger' effect, temperatures in central and southern Taiwan could soar above 34 degrees Celsius. Although Typhoon Dujuan is expected to form next week, it's predicted to make a sharp turn and head directly for the Kanto region of Japan. Therefore, the upcoming 4-day Mid-Autumn Festival and Teachers' Day holiday across Taiwan is expected to be mostly clear and stable nationwide.

Taiwan Earthquake Monitoring (Live Stream)

This channel monitors for current earthquakes in Taiwan. When an earthquake occurs, it will issue an alert through 'Di Jiu Wake Up' (bottom left-middle). Earthquake reports will also appear in the top left-middle. For details, please refer to the description below the live stream. If you're bored, someone will keep you company here :D Whenever there's an earthquake, a crowd of people appears. I once saw a record high of 10K people within 5 minutes after a major earthquake. It was insane. Of course, there are usually fewer people (around 500). Differences in Surface Weather Maps Between Japan and Taiwan

Japan's surface weather maps have a shorter update interval (if I remember correctly). Taiwan's surface weather maps have markers added on top of the satellite imagery. Japan's standards seem stricter if I recall correctly (?) So some areas differ quite a bit. (My earth science teacher's lecture notes seem to use Japan's) But I think Taiwan's depiction of fronts looks better, so I tend to look at the 'Satellite Imagery' more often. Satellite imagery... it's just satellite imagery, I look at it a lot (looking for typhoons :)) I also look at 'windy' to check wind direction (the particle animations are so cool). And that's how I fell in love with atmospheric science.

The Legend of Earthquakes|A Giant Catfish Lives Underground?🐟

Have any of you heard of the Japanese 'Giant Catfish Legend' about earthquakes? When I watched 'Suzume no Tojimari' before, it depicted the giant entity that could cause earthquakes as an 'earthworm'🪱, and sealed it with a 'key stone'. Recently, while watching 'MAO Mao', I saw a 'key stone' related to earthquakes appear again, which made me curious to look it up— Turns out, there's a long-standing earthquake legend in Japan behind it!😆 Legend has it that a giant catfish lives underground in Japan, and when it stirs, it causes earthquakes, and the 'key stone' is responsible for sealing it. The most famous is the Kanashima Shrine's key stone, which legend says presses down on the head of the giant underground catfish to prevent it from causing earthquakes. I initially thought it was just a plot device, but discovered there was a common folklore behind it! Meanwhile, in Taiwan, earthquakes are referred to as 'the earth ox flipping over' (地牛翻身)🐂. It seems different animals live underground in different places!😆
